What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love all different genres of writing.
The top of my list is Watership Down by Richard Adams. My mom had me watch the cartoon of the book one day when I was sick; and it had very graphic killing in it that disturbed me. At that time I was only eight. As I got older I felt there was something more to the story that I was missing. So my mom bought the book for me. I read it when I was twelve years old. It was a wonderful multi-layed story of survival over many difficult tradegies. It's a wonderful fiction story.
Number two is Dear and Glorious Physician by Taylor Caldwell. It is a period piece written about Saint Luke's life before he wrote the book in the Bible. It's how he grew up and what lead him to investigate the life of Jesus Christ.
Third is Dune by Frank Herbert. It is a gripping science fiction story. When I read it I was transported to a possible future. I was enthralled not only by the characters created, but also by the elements of the societies that Frank Herbert created. It transends just one novel, but made up an entire universe.
The fourth on my list is Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings. I got this book as a Christmas gift from my mom. It was an exciting first part of a series of books. I fell in love with the author.
Last on my list is House of Scropio by Pat Wallace. It is a Gothic Romance. It's a about six sisters separated as young children. The society that they live in is based on Astrological signs of the people. It is an interesting twist to create the romance and discovery of the characters.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing poetry when I was eight. As I got older I started to create stories. The first was a short story when I was in sixth grade. Afterr that they just started to flow out of my imagination. I keep a notebook filled with ideas I get if I'm already working on a project.
Who are your favorite authors?
My all time favorite author/s would be David Eddings and his wife, Leigh. They are imaginative fantasy writers. I also enjoy reading the works of Frank Herbert and his son, Anthony Burgess, Piers Anthony, Joel Rosenberg, and V.C. Andrews.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read. I'll read anything available. My favorite is science fiction and fantasy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I was very old-fashioned, reading from a paper book in my hand. 2013 my husband bought me a Nook, and I fell in love with it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the most important part of writing. Without someone to read the stories, it's just words on paper.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I started writing poetry by age eight. When I got into 6th grade my teacher was big on writing assignments. Our class would have to write essays, stories and reports. So I decided to try writing a story for my personal enjoyment. I wrote a horror story called Red Snow. It was about a family trapped in a cabin during a snow storm. They had to figure out who was trying to kill them before they all are murdered.
Not exactly what you would expect from an eleven year old. My parents weren't to happy about the type of story I had written, but they never criticized or discouraged me from writing. They always supported what I liked to try. In fact, they gave me a typewriter for Christmas.
Describe your desk
I have a wonderful old-fashion roll top desk that my husband found and restored for me. I keep cups filled with different coloured pens for writing. I keep various things in the top drawer to help me write.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is when I get my story down on paper. I have so many vivid thoughts and ideas about these different things that happen. When I can get them down it's like I'm setting them free.
What is your writing process?
I start with an idea. I will jot down as many details I can into a notebook. Then I start fleshing out who and what is going on. When I finally put pen to paper I let the story flow out of me. As I enter what I wrote into the computer I will expand in places I need to explain more or fix problems with connections. If I get stuck I like to listen to music. Sometimes taking a nap works well for me, because I get answers to my blocks from dreams. Other times I discuss my story with my husband. He helps by providing a different view of things.
