Interview with Tess Mackenzie

So I’ve never heard of you. Who are you?
I’m Tess, I write erotica, and you should probably know that up front so you don’t get all offended by this.

I try to write about believable people, people like you and me, doing things that don’t seem horribly out of the ordinary as they happen. So everyday people, having especially kinky days. The kind of days they remember for the rest of their lives.

I guess that’s what Jack Bauer was having too, really. A day he’d remember for the rest of his life. Just, like, seven times over.

So what I write is really like any other story, with characters and plot and the characters doing things, and having crises, and people overcoming them. Except with sex.

That’s about it, really.

Um, also fair warning, I tend to talk, a lot. Like this thing is probably going to go to screens and screens once I get started. Just, um, sorry?
Tess, dude, you have a really foul mouth. What’s with that?
Um, that isn’t actually a real Smashwords interview question, it’s just me setting one up so I can do a warning before you read any further. Because not everyone wants to read smut, and not everyone wants bad language in their face all the time.

So I swear a lot. On my blog. On my Smashwords profile. Not so much in the real writing, but everywhere else. And I’ll probably end up swearing here, just because I can’t help myself.

I had a no-swearing-in-blog-post-titles rule way back when. Which doesn’t seem that hard to stick too. But, um, that lasted about a week before I forgot and broke it.

Yes, without realizing. I really do talk this badly without meaning to. And I’m going to stop trying from here on in. Where stop trying means not doing an actual search for bad words I might have used like I did down to here.

So please stop if it’s going to bother you.

Seriously.

So we’re good? Want to keep going?

Cool. On to the real interview questions.
When did you start writing?
I think when I was like seven or eight or something, very badly.

Then about thirteen, also really badly. With extra angst.

Then again at the end of last year because I decided that this was something I really wanted to try, and if I didn’t now then I probably never would, and because other life circumstances came together to let it happen - meaning I wasn’t working.

But also, sort of always.

I think the part of my mind that gets used for writing now, it was always just there, ticking over, sort of daydreaming. So there was internal head-space creative thing going on, even if I never actually wrote any of it down. If that makes sense.

Like I’d always done the part of writing that happens in my head, and I probably seemed a bit weird - and possibly stoned - a lot of the time because of it.

The difference was really only that I started typing one day. And doing that actually felt like this deep and profound fit, as if some part of me that had always been around suddenly had something to do.

I guess like suddenly taking up a sport when you’ve always been throwing a ball around anyway. It’s not that you suddenly do something new, it’s that suddenly you have a label for it, and are doing this particular thing other people get. But all the same, it’s all kind of familiar, and probably you just needed a bit of structure and a push to get moving.

Fuck, looking at all that, I really must come across as a bit weird sometimes.

Anyways. Onwards.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yep. First as a semi-adult, anyway. Not whatever I did when I was seven.

Looking back, it was terrible. It was about a girl rock-band, and how they were these total gods of fucking rock. Goddesses, I mean. And they basically behaved like total spoiled fuckwad monsters, because how they were fucking rock stars and no-one ever got to tell them what to do.

Guess what was going on in my life right then.

So Hannah Montana with swearing and sex and fucking attitude, basically. So yeah, they were all just awful spoiled people, and if I read it now I’d probably be hoping for an inopportune rain-storm to cause mass-electrocution.

It was that bad.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It isn’t, not really. Honestly, it’s not a joy, it’s just there.

Yeah, I’m like the tortured fucking artist.

Finishing something is a joy. Knowing you did it okay is a joy.

Having words just pour out of you onto the screen is a joy, but it’s something more too. It’s like eating and drinking, almost. It’s so basic and primal it isn’t so much as joy, as just there and happening. So joy, if you have to pick a word, but maybe a better word is satisfying, or sated, or easing a discomfort you’re not really aware of until you do.

Like shifting a bit when you’re sitting on your own foot and cutting off the blood?

Yeah, blah, arty people, don’t you hate them getting all exceptionalist about their own talent and carrying on like they have this special fucking genius, what total fucktards.

So anyways.

The writing is a kind of a funny thing, and it’s not completely under my control, and I don’t know how it works. But it is deeper than merely joy. An unfinished story inside me is like an actual problem.

Like having wind, maybe?

Um, now I sound like those sex-ed books that try and explain orgasms as being like sneezes.

What I mean is that having words come out, and having a story end up on the page, that is profoundly good, and some deep validation or satisfaction about who you are.

Like without making too much of this, all the existential angst wondering what your place in the universe is? When I write well, then I know. It’s that.

But then again, after I write well there’s a whole lot of rewriting and editing and fiddling around, which is really just pedantic and shitty and awful.

So I don’t know that joy is the right word.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Weirdly, not the writing.

A whole bunch of things that mostly come down to life not sucking as totally as it could, so making the most of it while that’s true.

Because life can suck. And does for a lot of people, horribly. So if you happen to be in a place in yours where it doesn’t, not too badly, you should take advantage of that.

Something like that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
House stuff. I’m lucky enough my partner does the money-making and bill-paying side of things, so I do the housewifing.

Also I watch movies. Like all the movies. Pretty much anything, ever, from any point in time.

And also, because I live in Sydney, sitting in traffic. Sydney is basically the LA of Australia for this. Any time you go anywhere and the sun is actually in the sky, there’s traffic.

And Sydney also has palm trees, come to think of it. So like LA for that, too. Um, palm trees, sort of.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yep.

Well, the first story that wasn’t about hungry caterpillars and how someone found their socks, anyway.

It was about talking cats in London, and the main character was the king of the cats by night, but a house cat by day. Something like that.

And then a whole lot more fantasy after that.

I also read the usual YA stuff, like about cheerleaders in SoCal high schools and mystery-solving pony clubs, but I think the books that really touched me, and moved me, and that I still remember, are those fantasy ones.

So yeah, I was on the fantasy bandwagon before Harry Potter came along, so there.
What do you read for pleasure?
This is terrible, but I don’t.

I feel almost guilty.

Partly, after reading my own writing all day, reading is a bit too much like work.

Partly my brain is a this gigantic idea-parasite and will steal bits of other people’s stories or writing style if I let it.

So I don’t.
What is your writing process?
Um, I don’t have one. Not like I think you mean.

Completely seriously. Things pop into my head. I write them down. Some of them are awful and some aren’t, and the ones that aren’t, I look at for a while and then change and add things and call them done.

To be honest, I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing with this. I never did any writing classes, or English Lit, or any of that. I just started, and it seems to be working. Except for the shitty grammar sometimes.

But.

Not only am I not completely sure why it’s working, I’m also unspeakably superstitious about doing something that breaks it and makes it stop.

Search the blog for Vitamin B12 and you’ll see.

So yeah.

Process I guess is thinking up stuff, right?

So oddly, with erotica, thinking up the rude bits isn’t actually the tricky thing. It’s thinking up everything else going on around that. Like why someone is wanting to do a particular deed, or who around her will be impacted by it, or whether they’ll join in, or run away, or what.

Because even erotica is still mostly about characters, and how their quirks fit into things in the plot, and how the reader should still finish the story thinking that everything fit together and made sense.

So if someone wants to say, have a threeway, you need to work out what state her relationship is in, and why she’d want to do that, and why her partner would be okay with it.

And I’m not perfect at this either, yet. I think sometimes the reasons I come up with are just wildly implausible. But I try.

So that’s the process.

And maybe saying that makes me look like a total perve, walking around with dirty fantasies in my head all day.

Um. Yeah.

Also, I don’t know if it’s normal, but things come out in a set order, too. So if I have an idea, I have to write it down, even as just a note to myself for later, or the next one won’t come.

That took a while to work out. Like total fucking writer’s block until I did.

I think that’s all. And again, I’m really not sure this answer makes me look entirely normal.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Um, given my latest book? Just no fucking way.

Oh all right. I think this is far enough down the page you won’t see it by accident so if you kept reading it’s your own fault.

So my latest book, by which we mean short story, is called Autofellatio, and it’s about someone who finds out her fuck-buddy can fellate himself.

So she has sex with him. And gets him to go down on her while he does.

So the story behind it?

Um, nothing, really.

I’m a total pervert, and I saw this particular deed in a film ages ago, and while many other, nicer people were busy being shocked, or turned on, or impressed by that dude’s flexibility, or whatever, I guess I was just thinking, hey, if he can reach himself, he should be able to reach anything that he’s inside too. Like me.

So I wrote that in a story.

Basically.
What are you working on next?
I’m trying to write a full-length novel, about two couples on holiday exploring sex with each other. And this is me, so they do explore the sex, and then, right after they do, it all goes wrong. And people get upset.

But this is taking some time. I just posted on my blog about how I’m shocked how long a novel takes, compared to say, ten short stories.

It’s now turning into this monster of doom hanging over me.

I’ll finish it. I’m just procrastinating by doing things like, um, well, this.
How do you approach cover design?
Sexy, but not too much. And not showing faces.

Not showing faces because that means the person could be anyone, and you’re all supposed to identify better with her and shit. Also because the models might not want to be on smut covers.

I started off doing that because I was copying the smuttier kind of romance novel covers, so you see torsos and a couple and writhing. Then there was a whole thing where I found out I don’t actually write romance, so I should probably have stopped that. I’ve since come across the idea since that maybe it isn’t completely cool, even in erotica, and we should all try for a bit more class about the covers. So I don’t know. I’m sort of trying to do that, except how I already have a pile of grubby photos I can use.

Anyways, I get a photo, then crop and zoom in and make it all sketchy and blurry and such because there’s a lot of other people doing a lot of other covers, and all the erotica ones tend to be from the same pool of photos, and I don’t want to end up with the same cover as someone else

Because that seems like wearing the same thing to a party, and is probably just awkward.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Giving everything away.

So either free, or Smashwords reader set the price. Using that like shareware.

I mean, I don’t have any comparison because I started doing that very early and still do, but I think the easiest thing is to just let people have all your writing, and assume they’ll come back eventually and pay.

Which sounds stupidly naive, but I’m doing it anyway.

I try pretty hard to give people things free, like here and other sites and my own website, and it seems to work. And I keep pointing out they should go here instead of other stores because of the free.

People keep choosing to pay for things when they don’t have to pay for. Which is fucking cool, by the way, and thank you.

It also says something about people that I quite like being part of saying. Like how they’re fair, if you’re fair to them. Something like that.

And it seems fairer, too, in that what I write might not be for everyone, so people can try it first.

And also, pragmatically, I think it takes up less time just to make everything free or almost-free than to get all obsessed with managing promotions and sales and advertising them all over twitter.

But that’s just me.

And of course I have no comparison. My feeling is I’d end up selling about the same number of copies for money, either way. It’s just that by doing it this way, there’s hundreds of free copies around as well that someone might read one day. So since these are ebooks and don’t cost me anything to make, once I’ve written the one that someone pays for, people may as well have them.

So that’s what I do. But I realize some people aren’t going to agree it’s a good idea.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Um, success is it?

Seriously, by being there. By making a space where writers and readers can come together. By not being difficult about the topics people choose to write about, and just letting readers choose what they want to read.

By which I mean, by not being difficult about erotica.

And also with the “reader sets price” thing.

So basically, I didn’t have any success before I was here, because I wasn’t doing anything, and I probably still wouldn’t be if I was waiting for publishers and agents to get back to me. So I’m completely fucking grateful to Smashwords, and that’s why I keep hanging around.

So with success, everything from this point on is upwards.

And I am so a total fucking sparkly hippy saying shit like that. But it's also actually true.
Describe your desk
Ha! This one’s brilliant.

It’s completely bare. It’s an old school desk, basically, only slightly bigger than the laptop.

Um, that is, it is a desk that was formerly a school desk. Not an old-school desk like it’s something old fashioned or whatever.

Um. That was surprisingly grammatical for me.

Anyways.

The desk is like that so I can move it around if there’s noise or sun or whatever at one end of the house or the other.

But desk is also almost a conceptual idea.

Desk can be the couch, the bed, or sometimes in the car, too.

I did once try writing on the kitchen bench, when I had an idea I wanted to write down but also was watching something on the stove, but stopped that really quickly when I noticed spatter getting close to the computer.

But I always write on the computer, because I type faster than I hand-write, and my spelling is so shitty it’s easier just to write on a computer anyway.
Anything else before we go?
Um, just thank you for reading this, and for reading the stories too, and bye!
