Interview with Tiffany Craig

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly, it wasn't really a conscious decision. One day I took a look at my mountain of rejection letters and thought there must be a better way.
I was a little skeptical at first, but now that we have been with Smashwords for almost two years, I would never go back.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I wouldn't have had any success at all if it wasn't for Smashwords. The helped make a nobody writer like me into a well-known author.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like a lot of different authors such as, Jane Candia Coleman, VC Andrews and Jay Conrad Levinson, but my absolute favorite would have to be Michael Crichton. He’s the king of the scientific thriller!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
Dinosaurs and Science, enough said! I love the movie but, the book is way better.

2) The Lost World by Michael Crichton
Extremely different from the movie. Read it today!

3) Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
I saw the movie first, then scrambled to find the book. I don't know how he does it. An absolute masterpiece filled with love, reincarnation and suspense.

4) Doc Hollidays Woman by Jane Candia Coleman
A look into the past at a wonderfully beautiful, yet tragically sad love story.

5) The Casteel Series by VC Andrews
It's not a single book, but I really enjoyed this series. The strength of the character Heaven taught me to stick it out in the face of adversity.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Well, I have a large family, pets, and a home to care for, plus a business and a full-time job, so I stay pretty busy!
If I do find myself with spare time, I like to play video games, read and just hang out with my family.
Describe your desk
A mess. My office is in my bedroom and it takes up one entire corner. I have a large brown desk, filled with cubbyholes and drawers, and a large shelf that holds all my books and projects.
I usually do most of my writing in bed, however, snuggled up under the blankets!
What is your writing process?
I'm a very big procrastinator, so I have to force myself to put pen to paper and just write. I free write my entire first draft then go back over it later. That way I have something tangible to work with.
How do you approach cover design?
In the past we used clip art for our covers, but lately we've been going through our picture files and picking out the photos we like. When we decide on one that fits our story, we match colors and add text. In my opinion the photographs make the covers stand out more.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Smashwords. Without them no one would know who we are or be reading our work. I'm really glad we found them.
Just make sure you participate in all the promotions and events they offer.
You took nearly a year off from writing. What happened?
We had a lot of personal problems pop up and some things had to be put on a back burner, unfortunately, writing/publishing was one of them. But we're back now and jumping head-first into our publishing company 'Craiganmore Books'.
Were revamping the website, getting back to some old projects and, hopefully attracting more readers and fans!
