Interview with Tom Lichtenberg

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I started out self-publishing through Smashwords. At one time, my 'Zombie Nights' was the #1 most downloaded book on Smashwords. This helped some of my other titles make it onto the top 100 list at one time or another. Smashwords also gets me to Apple, Barnes&Noble, Scribd and elsewhere. It's a fantastic service.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a suspense story set in a not-so-distant future of the world starting to really feel the effects of climate change. At the same time I've been working on a series of stories about a "Big Data" detective, a sort of Sherlock meets Doctor Who meets Freakonomics romp of a thing.
What is your writing process?
I go for long walks and make up the next chapter in my mind. Then when I get home I type furiously until I run out of steam! Writing, for me, is the process of transcribing daydreams.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The flow of the writing itself is the best part. When I'm writing a story, I'm living in it all the time. I usually make it all up as I go along, and rarely revise except for tweaking details, so it's a big adventure, and sometimes, when I get to a critical point, it gets so exciting I just want to jump out of my skin. I love that!
Who are your favorite authors?
Cesar Aira, Julio Cortazar, Jorge Luis Borges, Roberto Arlt, Clarice Lispector, Flannery O'Connor, Italo Calvino, Macedonio Fernandez, Roberto Bolano
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hanging out with my family, biking, kayaking, hiking, playing guitar, reading,
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly from friends - both in the real world and on Goodreads.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was about a very small dinosaur named Pinky. I think I was about seven years old when I wrote it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was raised on the fairy tales gathered from all over the world by Andrew Lang, which showed me that the childish sense of the fantastic and wild is universally appealing. Later, when I first came across the "magical realism" of the great South American writers, the combination (along with certain elements of sci-fi) fired my imagination and led me in the direction of the kind of stories I ended up writing.
How do you approach cover design?
I make my own covers, usually using my own photographs and computer imaging software. I enjoy that almost as much as writing the books.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Mad Toy, by Roberto Arlt, is four coming of age stories set in Buenos Aires in the 1920's. To me it is the perfect book. The moment I finished reading it for the first time, I started reading it again.

The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector, is perhaps the most profound work of fiction I know, capturing the essential nature of all people in the person of one poor migrant from the country to the big city of Sao Paolo.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, by Philip K. Dick, is one of the great works of ideas I've ever read. He put so much creativity and originality into that one book that the human race may never catch up to all of them.

Roadside Picnic, by the Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, is a great work of science fiction, illustrating the likeliness that we would never, ever be able to comprehend an alien race, any more than we can even understand the lives of the other creatures of our same planet. I also love the gritty noir presentation combined with science fiction.

Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor is just so brilliantly written and funny and true. I think she captured an American vernacular and mindset better than anyone else ever has.
What do you read for pleasure?
These days I read mainly contemporary world literature, writers like Bolano and Saramago and Aira.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Google Nexus 7 for reading.
