Interview with Trina Michelle

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was almost 20 years ago. I was struggling with how to deal with family members and close friends suffering from drug addiction. It seemed as though my prayers for them were going unanswered. And then it happened. I was living in San Antonio Texas and one day I sat down and began to type. I had no idea where the words were coming from but they just flowed. Hours later, I got up from the desk and much to my surprise I had a complete story. Through my writing I was able to purge, if you will, my thoughts. The Color of Sin is what I eventually titled it. Stay tuned, you may just see it on Smashwords:)
What is your writing process?
I really don't have a process per say. There are times in my life that I have absolutely nothing to say and then there are times that I am overflowing with words and if I don't get them down on paper I feel like I will burst. During those times I just sit and I type. The words flow and I simply type out my thoughts.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Of course I do. Well I don't know if it's the first story I read but it most certainly had a major impact on me...Are you there God, It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume. It changed my life. And you have to know, when my daughters were old enough to read it, I made sure they had a copy. And much to my delight they loved it just as much as I did. They are talkers, much like there mom, and we had blast discussing the book over kool aid and popcorn...LOL
How do you approach cover design?
I want a cover that will capture the readers attention. My hope is that the reader can look at the cover and get a good idea what the book will be about. Now with that said, I do like to surprise my reader so I do think about how I can convey my message with a slight twist using the cover design.
What do you read for pleasure?
A good romance novel will do it for me every time. But I also enjoy espionage and a good thriller every now and again as well.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
This is my first E-book but I hope that word of mouth will have a major impact in reaching the reader. I also plan to use social media.
Describe your desk
It's a mess right now. I literally just published my book maybe an hour ago so my desk if littered with the Smashwords Guide to Publishing, the Marketing Guide and How to Create, Publish and Distribute E-books with Smashwords.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Indiana but as a child I moved around quite a bit. And as fate would have it, I was a military wife for years and moved around the country as well, even overseas. Having the opportunity to live in another country, experience the culture as well meeting a diverse group of people living in various states; my writing and thought process has been greatly influenced. I believe you look at the world differently after you have lived in another country, even in different states. The world is so diverse and everything that I have experienced influences my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I would say as child. I am a dreamer and I constantly live in my head. I'm sure you remember the dreaded book reports. I always wanted to either add something to the story or change it all together. Well it's hard to do that in elementary and junior high because typically the teacher has read the book they have assigned. However, in high school all bets were off, save Shakespeare and the other classics of course. Other than those, all of my book reports had my own little spin included in the report...Shhh don't tell anyone:)
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a woman in crisis. And haven't we all been there in our lives. Being a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sibling and hundred more things to another hundred people can be overwhelming if we don't stop and take inventory of us. As women we give so much and rarely to do we take. And sometimes we are pushed over the edge, much like Sarah. I hope that the reader walks away feeling inspired and knowing that she is a phenomenal woman and that it is imperative that we carve out sometime for ourselves and remember what's really important so we can be all those things we love to be to everyone else.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have tried for quite some time to publish the traditional route, if you will. But to no avail. This is actually my third time at bat to do something with my work. Believe you me it's been hard to get back on the horse but I can't shake the urge to write. I've tried, but it just won't go away. So when the feeling hit again, I argued with God about it for weeks but of course He won. I agreed to this last time...LOL and wouldn't you know it, I got on my computer and found Smashwords. I had never heard of Smashwords until I stumbled upon them looking for a publisher. I'm not sure if I answered the question, but now you know how I became an indie author.
