Interview with Michael T. Ward

Published 2014-01-26.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Not only seeing what my imagination will come up with, but the excitement of the readers who are reading because they truly enjoy what they are reading.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean the most because they continue to ask for more and cause me to push myself to come up with more for them, not just myself.
What are you working on next?
There are several things in the works, but to continue with what my readers want and push to find new and more ideas to bring imaginations to life.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it is still one of my favorites. A children's story about a farm tractor who wants more out of life and travels to the city to discover his future. It's based on following ones dreams instead of just going through life as others think you should.
Describe your desk
Messy...lol. It's an accumulation of a multitude of things going on, just like my imagination. Kind of like, organized chaos...lol
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
In a very small town in Ohio. Lots of older brothers and sisters but I had a lot of time by myself when I was little and learned to depend on my imagination. I simply carried that with me through life and writing gives me the opportunity to use it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a belief that I carry where kids can be quite adventurous and problematic at times, but it doesn't mean they are bad or trying to get into trouble. Sometimes we have the best intentions and can create the greatest trouble... lol
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is and excellent tool for authors to share great stories and information without relying on publishing companies and agents who have standards they may not meet. There are a tremendous amount of great reads on Smashwords that are undiscovered gems. Look at how many people passed up the Harry Potter series before it finally was given a chance. This is the same story of Smashwords. I believe many will do fabulously without the big publishing houses.
What is your writing process?
I know what I want in a book. I continue to come up with things that could happen then, I find a start and an end. Then like a movie playing in my head I run scene after scene until the story moves from beginning to end.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Without mentioning the name, it was a story that continued to pull me all the way through. That is when I first discovered the types of stories I liked and started thinking about all the kids who aren't necessarily bad readers, they just need something to spark their interest and pull them through the story.
