Interview with Hayley Shaver

Published 2014-03-15.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book about cats. it includes a list of what my cat wants human pets to know, pictures of special cats, poems about cats, and stories about special cats.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Jonathan Kellerman because he writes so well. I also love Kristen Britain because her epic fantasy stories are such that you can't put them down.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love to write. I love to read and walk my dogs, Misty and Pigglet.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Walking my dogs, reading, and doing crossword puzzles.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Sometimes I browse the specials and freebies, and sometimes I have certain book I order because I anticipate them. These I usually preorder.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Sure I do. It was about a cricket that went around town. I wrote it when I was five.
What is your writing process?
I need to, first, see if I want to write about something specific. I need to have it excite me. I need to dream about what I'm going to write next. I need to see if I can imagine my characters speaking. If I can, I write.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. It was The Cat in a Hat, by Dr. Seuss. I loved it and shortly after I decided I wanted to write.
How do you approach cover design?
I decide what I want my cover to tell. I decide what cover I want based on this.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
That's hard. One is Green Rider by Kristen Britain. Another is We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates. I also like The Almond Tree, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, and Wash. These I turn to when I forget for a moment why I write. They show me what great writing can do or give to a person.
What do you read for pleasure?
Lots of fantasies and practically anything else.
