Interview with Wendy Maddocks

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in hell. No, literally.

Okay, it was a rough council estate and then I moved to a slightly lwss rough estate. I think this made my writing a bit more violent and gritty but I've always tried to make my work a bit more escapist. On my old estaate, you kept yourself to yourself and that notion of keeping things out of common knowledge is woven through my work.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first story when I was about three or four years old. It was called 'when dinosaurs ruled the Earth'.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is a secret. The characters will be familar to some of my readers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
i like to read, although I don't do it as much as I used to. it's mostly paranormal stuff with some kind of 'other' creature in there but I do tend to throw in the odd sci-fi, horror or classic. I've just finished uni so I'm enjoying my freedom to hang with my boyfriend, listen to music, take an art class.
What is your writing process?
From the very beginning? Okay, hope you're sitting comfortably - this could take a while...
i normally have this striking dream and i just know I need to turn it into a story. So I scribble down any important details i might forget, names, places, stuff like that. Then I turn over and have the rest of my sleep. Let the idea stew for a while and if I have the dream again, I know it's a goodie. keep having the dream until I've written it.
Usually in the middle of the night or evening - I do my besty work when the sun goes down - I set my computer up, keep a bottle of water and a bar of chocolate handy, put my music on and away we go. Then I stop dreaming.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually, I wait until the book is mostly written and I know how the rest should pan out, then i try to find the stand out image that sticks in my head. Then i create a few samples that cAPTURE THAT AND DECIDE WHICH UITS THE BOOK BEST. THE SIMPLE ONES SEEM TO WORK OUT THE BEST.
Describe your desk
My desk is utter chaos. An extension of my mind!

Obviously my laptop takes centre stage but it is floating in a sea of madness. I'll list the things I can see : bills, deodorant, manicure set, stapler, penny, flash drive, batteries, pills, letter rack, mirror, computer stuff, random chargers, statioery, lamp, piggy bank, mirror, stuffed bunny, sweets, fairy, rhinestones.

Messy, illogical, but it's how I wwork best.
