Andrew F Haydock

Biography

Andrew Haydock was brought up in Lanarkshire, just outside of Glasgow. A late developer, he first took up his typewriter with serious intent at the age of 35, produced two bad novels long since consigned to the bin, then realised that what he needed to spur him into meaningful creativity were the pangs of exile and the accompanying perspective they give of one's native land. He first ventured to Egypt, but found the atmosphere of Cairo uncongenial, and the fleas inescapable, before ending up in the Czech Republic in which he had cherished an interest since winning a spelling competition at the age of nine through being the only one in his class able to spell Czechoslovakia. He went digital some seven years ago, due to the difficulty of finding replacement typewriter ribbons. The Czech writer he most enjoys and aspires to model himself on is Josef Skvorecky, who was himself for much of his life an exile. Andrew Haydock's day job is as a teacher of English at a grammar school in Brno, the second city of the Czech Republic.
