Biography

A lifetime journalist (reporter, editor and author), he was hospitalized with COPD and given six months to live. Turning to Tibetan Buddhism in preparation for his death, he was placed on oxygen 24x7, given physical therapy and a heavy medication regimen. A practicing Buddhist only sparely for years (what he calls a 'drop in' Buddhist), he began doing intensive meditation. Two months later, a medical rehabilitation had been achieved and the six-month estimate scrapped. At a loss as to what to do next, he turned to the ancient book of Chinese divination, I Ching, which he had consulted for thirty years. "Show your appreciation," it advised. Researching and writing that oracle's biography was the means selected and this book the result. Shortly thereafter, his journey from this life resumed its previous pace and now may be accelerating.
He is now conducts a weekly program of mindfulness meditation for his fellow patients at their San Francisco Bay Area convalescent hospital as a volunteer and commutes by paratransit as a member of a San Francisco meditation center that meets weekly.
He holds both a master's and law degree (from University of Southern California and People's College of Law, respectively). In 1965 he traveled widely through Asia as a graduate fellow with the Institute for International Education, and USC and interned with the U.S. Agency for International Development in the U.S. Embassy in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam.
In preparing this book, he cited much from the five leading versions of the I Ching, seminal material in Buddhist psychology and Mahayana philosophy.and the lessons he learned in using the oracle in overcoming sexual addiction.
