This gem of a novel will have you laughing aloud and cheering for the underdog all the while wishing you were part of the action. The comedic chronicles of Last, Suresh, Treasure, Arthur, Sammy and Heidi, as well as the masterfully crafted supporting characters, illustrate an understanding of the strains and glories of both gay and straight worlds. The antics of the players intertwine in a way that puts the reader squarely in the realm of small town Reginald. One witnesses, through witty, satirical prose, the exhilaration of triumphant rebellious adolescence, the excitement of sexual freedom and the release from an oppressive status quo who, not so surprisingly, but deservingly, ends up contributing to its own demise. Clearly, Emkay Scott respects his reader’s perceptions as he develops his character’s lives with details that make one care about their next days, weeks and years – his characters are unpredictably real in substance as well as hilarious in thought, word and deed. The relevance of this story to modern times is clear - bullying, racist attitudes and controlling, due to the fear of change, can be transformed – there is always hope. There is a lot packed into this concise novel and the ending will catch your breath and make you exclaim - We want more Emkay – where is the sequel?
