A Simple Guide to Self-Publishing

A very timely topic in a very short tome. She starts by saying that if you aren’t in a niche market try traditional publishing first, but then generalizes by saying “Many hurdles are thrown at you before you can even hope to get your work read. However, if you can work your way through these difficulties, you are more likely to achieve success.” Yes I know this is a book on self-publishing, but if you’re going to mention obstacles, at least be specific. What hurdles? What difficulties? I like that she quotes others, but other than Publishing Consultant, doesn’t say where they’re from or what credentials they have. I don’t need a laundry list, but something more along the lines of Publishing Consultant with X years working for Y major print houses. The section on social media and blogging is interesting but again incredibly general. She said: “There are many websites that discuss blogging, and how to be successful with it. You can sign up and receive weekly emails with latest tips, and join online forums.” I’d have liked some examples or even key words to search for online. I do like the positive aspect of her book: NEVER GIVE UP. It’s great advice no matter what you’re doing, and especially in the publishing world. All in all, I think this is a well-researched book, but given to generalities. On the other hand, I’ve spent considerable time researching self-publishing, especially e-publishing, so I know much of what Ms. Ransley says here. If you’re new to the publishing world, or just now feeling out the waters of self-publishing/e-publishing, then this s a good primer.
