Carolyn Gold

Biography

I was born in New Mexico and grew up everywhere. We moved nearly every other year as my father followed a career in the Air Force. Life was filled with a wide variety of people and places, from Turkey to Labrador, Wisconsin to California. My books aim first to entertain, but reflect my personal values: compassion, tolerance and curiosity, sadness and joy, and a deep love of nature. My first book, Dragonfly Secret, was published by Atheneum in 1997 and nominated for the Sunshine State Young Readers' Award Program.

Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first one I remember was in junior high. It was about a man defecting across the Berlin Wall. Guess that dates me for sure!
What is your writing process?
I usually come up with a "what if" question. Then I let it simmer in my head for a long time until the who, where and when fill themselves in. The story itself always starts with the characters. Dragonfly Secret began with the question, "What if there were fairies here today? Where would we find them?" But the story developed around the people who found the fairies, and how they reacted.

  • Crimes of Magic: The Witch's Artifact on Jan. 04, 2015

A little loosely written, but a good plot, based on the idea that magic and science are very closely related. The concept is believable and well handled. Characters are likeable. Good casual read.
  • NO EXIT (The Apple Grove Gang #1) on Jan. 04, 2015

Old fashioned fun, set in the era of Green Stamps. Kids may not get all the references, but grandparents reading aloud will. Good plot. Fun characters.
