Having read a pre-publication version of Xmas Carol, I was delighted to see it finally and find to be that rare thing, a truly original work, a skillful blend of mystery, horror, and a near-future science fiction. While most fiction requires a certain suspension of belief in accepting its premises, Mr. O’Connor manages a sustained bewilderment in his characters and plots, a slowly ascending creepiness in his horror, and most admirably in my mind, manages to render his creation of a fantastic other world so explanatory believable that one feels the suspension of belief is no longer necessary. That, plus cliff hanger chapter endings and plot twist surprises compel you to move forward toward the finish, still wondering what that finish could be. It is intriguing and fun and I highly recommend it.
