Damien Darby

Biography

Damien Darby is a professional independent web writer and marketing/branding consultant that's been dabbling in ebooks since 2010. On top of ghostwriting 60-100 ebooks (both fiction and non) for clients over the last few years, he's published a few of his own. His latest, oDesk Domination, tells his personal story and teaches people how to become successful digital workers (brands).

When he isn't writing or consulting, he's either with his 6 year old or being a big fitness geek working out 4 days a week, jogging all over his island, and in the summer months hiking and mountain biking. Down to earth and genuine, don't hesitate to contact Damien and see if he can be of service.

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
To be honest, back in 2008 it was the economic collapse coinciding with technological advancement that had me starting to consider alternative ways of making a living. I started with ebooks and published 5 fiction novels. Some are gone now, but it was the beginning of a long adventure.

Today, 6 years later I make 100% of my income through the online world. And, what's more, at least once a week I'm contacted by a reader that enjoyed my work. That connection. That right there is what makes all this digital madness worth it. I like changing lives and being an indie author makes that more possible for me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, it was the SW platform that gave me my start with ebooks. I can't remember if I published on SW or Amazon first. Either way, it was Smashwords that taught me how to format ebooks and this was one of the first skills I sold when I transformed into a digital worker. Even though I was only beginning, I could point to my SW profile and say, "I'm an ebook expert" or, "I can format your ebook for Smashwords" or "I can help you get your ebooks published." The royalties have always been nice as well and pretty much right on par with those from Amazon.
