Smashwords book reviews by Dark Rider

After reading the first book in the series, I came looking for the second. Both were enjoyable reads and the third and fourth are free as well - which made my day, perhaps my week. These books are written as "young adult" fare, but I am an old man and I enjoyed the read greatly. If the author reads these reviews, thank you for making your works free in eformat. I am disabled and would not be able to read them if I had to pay for them.
  • UKIPia - Climate Control on April 18, 2013

This was fun to read. It's one of those short reads that let Climate Change True Believers laugh at how simple-minded Climate Change True Skeptics are and vice-versa. I recommend it.
  • The Queen's Blade on May 29, 2013

Great read! I am not yet through with "The Queen's Blade" and I'm already wondering how I will afford the rest of the series. I liked everything about this book. The writing, the characters both noble and base, the descriptions and the plot. This was as good a read as anything by Rathbone, Zelazny or SM Reine. What more can I say?
  • Rebel Grey on May 29, 2013

This was a good read. I have no problem with recommending it to other readers.
  • The Queen's Blade II - Sacrifice on June 22, 2013

Ms. Southwell adds depth to the wonderful characters from the Queen's Blade, introduces new people and places and thickens the plot in the second book of the series. The Queen's Blade series will compete favorably with any other story you've ever read. Reading these books becomes an obsession after the first - like potato chips, only better. Treat yourself to a little mind candy.
  • Magic of Thieves: Legends of Dimmingwood, Book 1 on July 13, 2013

This was a great read, I found the plot, the characters, pretty much everything about it enjoyable - and because this was the free version, it didn't bother me that I finished the read in not much over an hour. But as much as loved this book, even if I could afford the rest I don't think I'd buy them. Ebooks seem to be way thinner page-wise than the paperbacks I read these days. I understand both sides of it I think, cheaper production and lower sale price. But I'm not willing to pay $9 for the next three in the series when all four could have been easily combined and sold as a single $6 paperback at any big-box shop. That said, it WAS a great read! Read this one even if you don't read the others and if you've got money to burn read them all and tell the poor among us (me :) ) what happens to Ilan!
  • Halfkinds: Survival and Superiority (Volume 1 - Contact) on July 27, 2013

I d/l'd Halfkinds assuming it wouldn't be a great read - I was sooo wrong. My only complaint after reading it is that number two in the series is too pricey. This was an excellent read full of interesting characters, honor, deceit, heroism and cowardice and so much more. Read it, you'll love it!
