Doug Welch

Biography

Although I'm a retired community college instructor, I lived another life and acquired a wide range of experiences before my teaching and now author gig. I served the U.S. Navy and my country in Vietnam. I repaired robots and automated equipment in the aerospace industry. I was publicity chairman of the California Belly Dance Association for a while, actor in a motion picture, Manufacturing Engineer and Regional Chairman of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and finally Professor of Manufacturing Technology at a local community college. Name it, and I've likely done it.
However, despite threatening to do so for many years, I'd never written a book. At least, until now. It's a lot of work. You really, really have to love it. Fortunately, (or unfortunately) it do love it and plan to continue it as long as I can type, scribble or speak.

  • The Mating (The original Law of the Lycans story) on June 06, 2010
    (no rating)
This book is begging for a sequel. Excellent work in the werewolf/romance genre.
  • Black Silk on June 06, 2010

Read this on my Android. It was a good experience. Nice action thriller.
  • DEAD(ish) on June 06, 2010
    (no rating)
A really unusual theme for a supernatural genre book, unlike other books of this type. A little gross at times, since the heroine is literally rotting in place (a ghoul), but well written, with a lot of witty humor.
  • Last Days and Times on June 11, 2010
    (no rating)
This book is a prime example of the reason that commercial publishing houses are soo lame. The irony is, that the only possible reason that this is not a best-seller is because the publishing houses were afraid of right-wing-christian backlash if they did publish it. I have read many examples of the trash that comes from the big guys, and they cannot hold a candle to the quality of this book. It is fast paced, with impeccable timing, and contains characters whose fate you emote with and care about. Mr. Loy is one good author, and a great writer. I wish him the success that he deserves. I enjoyed this book immensely, so much so, that I purchased it to read to the end. I recommend that you buy it because, like me you will eventually.
  • The Mating (The original Law of the Lycans story) on Aug. 18, 2010

I am now reading The Keeping, and to this point, it seems to exceed The Mating in quality and style. The Mating is a very well written book, with both sexual and suspenseful danger, anticipation and drama. The author, Ms Charles, should be writing professionally. As an aside to the author, you should price this book, it certainly deserves some remuneration. I understand the motivation to be read; because I share it. However this book would be just as good and a pleasure to read, regardless of whether or not I paid for it.
  • The Keeping on Aug. 19, 2010

The fantastic Ms. Charles has done it again! An incredibly good book with intriguing characters and enough romantic and suspenseful tension to hold the reader riveted throughout the experience. The only criticism I might offer is the jarring presence of some unnecessary sex scenes; particularly the early scene between Kane and Elsie. While I have nothing against erotic passages, and frequently enjoy them, my feeling is that if the scene does not advance the plot, reveal character, or provide motivation, it is not necessary, and actually becomes gratuitous. Of course this perceived flaw reflects only my opinion, and did not prevent me from enjoying this truly marvelous book. Ms Charles is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors.
  • Melody and the Pier to Forever: Book One on April 21, 2011

When one reads a book as powerful as Melody and the Pier to Forever, it lodges in your heart and cannot escape. As an author and avid reader I thirst for an epic novel that moves me, and in this one stands way above the ordinary. From a larger perspective, the novel serves to validate all the hard work that we authors have poured into our works, because this book is better than most ever published, printed or offered as e-books. I cannot find adequate words express how grateful I am to Shawn Montaigne for writing this book. I wish that the site would allow a six star rating, because this book certainly deserves that. I hope that more are to come. I recommend this book to anyone who longs for a fun and serious read and wants to be consumed by a novel.
  • The Candle on April 24, 2011

Wonderful story. The writing is superb. One of the best novellas I have ever read on the net or in print. The author has an amazing ability to communicate passion and human emotion. Highly recommended.
  • The Bride Price on May 25, 2011

Sophie Ford lies dying in her bed in the year 2007 from a heart condition. She succumbs to her disease only to find herself well, but lying in the snow in Pennsylvania. The year is1863 and the Civil War is in full swing. In addition, the love of her life, her husband Jamie, is nowhere to be found. What has happened to him? How did she get here and why? Who wants to kill her? Will she be forced to marry a stranger to protect herself? These are only a few of the questions that keep the reader turning pages in this Science-Fiction/Fantasy novel about a woman who travels back in time to the era of the war between the states. “The Bride Price” is a compelling novel that will keep you engaged until the last page. After reading this book, you will want to read more books by Ms Jackson.
  • Riders of the Wind on June 08, 2011

I thoroughly enjoyed Riders of the Wind. The novel spans the early days of the aeronautical industry, and how that industry survived the Great Depression and spawned the common names we know today such as TWA, Eastern Airlines, American Airlines Lockheed and Boeing. It follows the lives of a real aviation family, Charles and Doretta Cross and includes several historical characters such as Charles Lindbergh and his family as some of the books minor characters. An aviation enthusiast will find much to like in the book, as it provides details of the technology that the pioneers of flight wrestled around the sky. The book has romance, danger and and tense moments, with a dabble of fantasy thrown in. All in all a very entertaining read.
  • Two People Having Sex (An Erotic Parody) on March 06, 2012
