Overall, I would give this book a 7 out of 10 rating. It does a great job of endearing the reader to the unsavory character of Adiran. The story is a new twist on the classic anti-hero, but without the usual "the ends justify the means" justification. One of the best aspects of this story is that it will surprise you by doing exactly what it promises and going exactly where it says it will. Things about this book that I liked: * With its 60-90 minute read time, first person perspective, and more or less real time events; this book feels similar to watching a movie. * The author uses a lot of description to set the scene. Primarily through the use of indirect comparisons to cause the reader to draw metaphors without being told to. * Great use of descriptive sections to slow down and speed up how quickly the scene moves. This really helps the reader get in the mind of the character. Of all the merits of this book and the author's skills, timing as whole is where Silvano Williams really shines. * Generally speaking, the book is fast paced with plenty of character driven events. Once you get to the meat of the story, the pages really start to fly and it's difficult to pull away. Which brings me to... Things about this book I didn't care for: * More or less the first 60 pages. The author takes so long setting the scene that it effectively feels like a third of the book is an introduction. Most of it is filled with the quasi-anarchic and nihilistic views of Adiran, which are necessary to set the mood...the first time. * Several times Adiran flashes back to various tragic memories. Some them are genuinely interesting and useful to setting the scene and the characters...others simply wouldn't be missed. * A few of the transitions are rather rough (The entry to Scott's house is one of the bigger examples). In conclusion, this book is definitely worth the read, and it is a amazing debut for Silvano Williams. I heartily recommend anyone to pick up this book for short and fast-paced read. I am also eager to see what Silvano produces next as he develops and matures as an author.
