Emily Hill

Biography

GENRE: Supernatural

Emily Hill is an author of many supernatural titles and the owner of A.V. Harrison Publishing of Edmonds, Washington.
Her first novel, 'Jenkins: Confederate Blockade Runner' [paperback] was published October 2010.

Known as 'The Ghost Chaser’s Daughter', Ms. Hill was brought up surrounded by her mother’s Ouija board sessions, flickering candles, and Tarot cards. Emily spent her youth in New Orleans frequenting palmistry parlors and has always had an intense awareness and respect for all that exists on the Other Side of the Grave.

Emily’s first ghost sighting occurred with she was seven years old. Being alone in her house, after her parents left for work, and as the apparition of her deceased grandfather roamed the house, made Emily forever aware of things that cannot be explained away in mainstream religious dogma, or on scientific terms.

"Ghosts of White Raven Estate" is this author's recently completed second novel. This NaNoWriMo 2012 winner reveals a more sinister side of New Orleans' history -- its Voodoo history!

With Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau ("Widow Paris") as her protagonist -- triangulated between an innocent ingenue and a less-than-innocent priest -- Ms. Hill weaves a wicked story of revenge with the revelry of Mardi Gras 1853 as the back drop. Spoiler alert: In the end Someone dies -- will it be The Priest, or The Voodoo Queen?

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Orleans, mostly. Or that is what I tell people.

The term 'grow up' is throwing me here because I am basically a Military Brat raised by a left-brain scientist and a right-brain, pot-smoking hippie.

New Orleans is where I came into my own around Tarot cards and Ouija boards; seances and tea leaves. It's where I lived when I left the Catholic Church, so in THAT sense it's where I grew up.

I'm sure that I could not have found such plentiful opportunities for forecasting my destiny using tools of the occult in the other cities we lived in while I was growing up; i.e. Springfield, Ohio, Tucson, Arizona, and Seattle, Washington.

I grew up in New Orleans - that's the answer I'm sticking to.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing novellas in second grade. My first one was entitled, 'The Widow', and was probably fifty words in length.

Looking back, the storyline - and title - seems rather dark for a seven-year old. It was about a woman whose husband had died. For years she lived a sad, remote existence. Then one day she remarried. The last words of the story were, "And the widow wasn't lonely any more."

I'm pretty sure I must have been writing about my grandmother whose second husband had been killed on Christmas morning the previous year.

My mother kept that story, written on lined paper, for forty-five years. I found it in her dresser drawer with my grade cards and school pictures after she died.

Impeccable! Bravo's to the author, a TweetMate of mine. For supernatural fans this story has the clever double-entendres, the symbolism, mysterious landscape that you're looking for...if you're looking for a look... Beyond The Grave. Easy to peg as a 5-star Civil War legend of horror.
