Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first piece you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. It was 2009, and I was in middle school at the time. Some girl I had a crush on rejected me on my MySpace after I tried to ask her out; I was too introverted to try in person. When I walked back home, I went to the mowed phone line area that split the hilly woods behind my house. I saw a tulip poplar sapling growing next to the gully between two hills that had avoided the lawn mowers; I suddenly felt empathy with this bold bloom, for I knew it would be mulched the next time the phone company went through the place. Its rogue growth suddenly connected the potential of the earth and the skies I realized were more sepia than usual. It was a little poem, but definitely a start. That's when I realized I had something to say. I might publish it in a later work.
What is your writing process?
I usually write a bulleted list of the topics depicted in the piece first, then I find the words needed to connect them, then I let my intuition choose the words needed to complete the gaps, then I try to make the piece carry a cadence.
