I've used the opening paragraph of this novel to teach other writers how to write a great beginning. The language and dialect of these characters are true to life, the situations taken as if from the brush country of Texas, and the simple poignancy of this story will linger with me all my days. As a result, I will be in very good company.

I am fortunate to call Don Johnson my friend. When others write about his "authentic voice" they attribute it to research. I suppose it is if you can consider life research. Don has lived these situations first hand as a man can live them only in the brush country of Texas. He's lived them in this lifetime, and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to learn he lived them in a previous lifetime about 160 years ago. Brasada is a tough book about tough characters in tough country. Only Don Johnson's deft hand could tame such a story. If he hadn't it might well have attacked the reader upon being opened. Bravo, Don, for yet another brilliant offering.

This is a strong story, filled with action, that's over entirely too quickly... then again, that's the whole premise. Wonderfully done.

This is an exciting, wonderful story that seems almost a collection of vignettes, glimpses into the particular, peculiar mini-worlds that are part of a larger world located on a single street of a town. A great short story. I wish Mr. Healy would collect some of these so I could purchase several at a time.
