Biography

I'm an avid reader, often reading a couple books in a day. I particularly enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy novels. I'm not a writer, but I have read a lot. I'm here to read some of the new authors out there, and see if I can find some gems among the ebooks rather than the more typical established authors.

Smashwords book reviews by John Phillips

  • The Rules. Book 1; The End on Oct. 04, 2013

An interesting enough tale, but written mostly as a series of single sentences, kind of odd. Paragraphs are OK, really. I gave it four stars for the story, but three and a half would be closer overall. For free, this is a good read. The author should continue to write, as long as your story is good, the rest of it can be fixed with practice. I look forward to reading your next one.
  • In Arms on Oct. 04, 2013

An interesting world, and some good characters. The descripton of some of the action could be better, particularly in the final battle between, well, I can't realy say without a spoiler. Anyway the big battle was a bit unsatisfying. Still, a good story overall. I'll read the next one for sure.
  • NexLord: Dark Prophecies on Oct. 09, 2013

A buddy of mine recommended this series, and I'm glad he did! What a wonderful story. The characters are great, the action flows quickly, and what a twist at the end! Can't wait to read book two. Also note, I read the other review here, and I did not notice many editing issues in this book. I went to check the date of publication, and noticed that this is a second edition. Looks like it has been edited since that review. If I was going to criticize anything, it would be the stress on friendship, but since this turned out to be the basis of the unique magic system, all is forgiven. Five Stars, it's that good.
  • NexLord: Black Chains on Oct. 10, 2013

This book continues right where the first one ended, and it also continued the good story telling and awesome characters. I LOVE the humor, and the climax, though quite different than the first novel, was kind of chilling. I didn't see it coming. Sorry, can't spoil it. I'm very curious where this is going. Can't wait for the third book. These are page turners, I finshed the first book the day I bought it, and the second one the next day. And, on the grammatical errors noted in Karhleen's review, in this new edition, that seems to be cleared up. Smooth sailing, great book. One of the best ebooks I've read. On to book three!
  • NexLord: Grim Realities on Oct. 11, 2013

First off, don't read Karhleen Woody's review until after you read the book, she unkindly included spoilers. I'm sorry I did before reading it. Now, onto my impression of this novel. It was definitely the best book of a great series. I couldn't put it down, and LOVED the many plot twists. There is a chapter that the author should have named 'revelations', it was a blast! The climax of the Nexlord series was spectacular. This is not just a good read, but one of my favorite series now. Book three really delivers. Final note, and I only mention this because of another review, this is a new Edition and has obviously been edited since Karhleen reviewed it. I highly recommend this series. I hope the author keeps writing!
  • Cathexis: Necromancer's Dagger on Oct. 15, 2013

I finished the book (late) last night. Good page turner. I loved the author's Nexlord series and had to see if this was as good. This one starts a little faster, with a lot of people, but the story flows nicely, and I love the characters. The magic system is unique, and well thought out. There is some good humor as well. I am finding this world to be quite interesting, and can't wait to see where the adventure goes in the next book. The cathexis metal, for which the series is obviously named, is also interesting. I highly recommend this read.
  • Cathexis: Conspirator's Coin on Oct. 29, 2013

Like in his Nexlord series that I really enjoyed, this second novel deals partly with kids, and this author really knows how to write them well. If anything this second novel in the series is better than the first, so I give it six stars! (Though the rating below only allows 5). I really enjoyed the characters and emotion of this book, not to mention chilling evil, and a wonderfully developing epic story. We'll worth the read, and you will run right to the next book, as I am doing today. I finished this book the same day I purchased it, it's a page turner.
  • Cathexis: Sorcerer's Ring on Oct. 30, 2013

Book three really delivered. The climax was epic and amazing. There were a lot of plot twists, and like the first two books, the characters were amazing. I feel like they are my friend's now. This had such a great climax that I am curious where it is going, but I would spoil things if I speculated. On to book four! I highly recommend you read the series.
  • Cathexis: Desecrator's Sword on Oct. 31, 2013

A very satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series. This epic story gets tied up in a nice gift box, and it is everything you wanted. This series was one of the best reads I have had in some time. Read it, you will find a great romp through a great fantasy world. If I was going to complain it would be to say I'm sorry its over.
  • zONE: The End and the Beginning on March 08, 2014

What a fun story! I loved the 'pirate ships'. There were some great twists toward the end, and a lot of fun along the way. I love the references to all the other works (movies, books, etc), including getting to briefly go to to some of those universes. A nice mix of Science Fiction and Adventure, with some fantasy and pirate stuff thrown in. Definitely an enjoyable read.
