Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
My bio doesn't lie. In the early 80's my two best friends and I decided to self-publish an interactive fantasy magazine that we distributed free through comic book stores. We invented a world and peopled it with folks that had problems to solve and quests to complete. We hoped that readers would contribute to the stories, but this was before everyone had computers, before Facebook, before Twitter, before blogs...in short it flopped. I loved that world though, and I loved Captain Fawr, the character I created for it. It is still the backdrop for most of my stories.
Who are your favorite authors?
I've got a lot of favorite authors and they are constantly changing as I find new people to read and admire. If I had to pick an all-time favorite, it is Dave Duncan. I love everything he has ever written. One cannot go wrong with Dave! Then of course there is Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, and OMG! my brand new hero, Brian McClellan!

But you're thinking; aren't you a romance author? Who do you like in that genre? Julia Quinn, Elizabeth Essex, Barbara Metzger, Meljean Brook, Lynsay Sands, Gini Koch, Jennifer Ashley, Christie Craig, Christina Dodd, and on and on. There are too many to name, and not all of them write what I'd call "traditional" romance.
