This is a different take on a dystopian YA novel. The story is not what you would normally think of when you think "dystopian"...so it's a nice change of pace. I don't usually get drawn to sci-fi books, but for some reason, this one held my interest pretty much throughout. The world ("Beta Earth") in this book is pretty wild, and the author does an amazing job of building that world to where the reader can actually see what she is talking about. But it's not IN YOUR FACE world-building like a lot of the YA dystopians are now. It worked into the story well. I thought it was pretty cool that the story went between two perspectives (Caryn and Kai). I haven't ready many other books like that, but the ones I have read, it was a neat change of pace. I enjoyed Caryn's character most in the book because it's almost a "coming of age" tale within this wild sci-fi dystopian world. You can see her becoming stronger and more badass throughout the entire book. The only thing that I wasn't a huge fan of was the ending. I kind of saw that coming, but overall, still a good book.
