When the Tiger Roars" by Pavithra Rao is an engaging story with a child protagonist, a suspenseful energy, and a wonderfully clever, twisting narrative. Two adolescent friends are caught up in a panic of their small town when burglaries begin to occur, which seem to be predicted by the roar of a tiger looming in the woods on the town's edge. It is mystery to be solved, and when the two boys set out to solve it, differences between the two boys become clear. They are different in temperament, curiosity, courage, upbringing, and socioeconomic background, and these differences emerge powerfully when it seems solving the mystery of the tiger in the woods is possible. The style of Ms. Rao is deceptively simple but rich, and the pace of the narrative pitch-perfect. She creates a detailed atmosphere that becomes appropriately claustrophobic until the excellent twist of an ending. An excellent read for YA readers and adults as well. I enjoyed it immensely.
