Lanie Malone

Biography

I am a wife, mother of two, and a college student. I love to read and it has always been a goal of mine to write my own novel. I am so very happy to have finally acheived it, and I would tell anyone else, if you're thinking about it, stop thinking and just start writing. No one can read your work if it's still all in your head.

I found it a little slow to start but it was definitely worth delving further into. A pleasure to read.

This short-story was an entertaining tale that demonstrates what a bitch kharma can be to those who behave badly. I found its darkness and the evil character of Jacob to be somewhat reminiscent of something by Edgar Alan Poe.

While I love PNR, historical romance was what got me hooked on reading and this book has everything I would expect from the genre except sex, which was kind of refreshing. Boys meets girl, girl plays hard to get, boy eventually wins her over and they live happily ever after is the standard format for pretty much all romance. The elements that determine the quality of a novel are things like character depth, back story, plot (outside of the falling in love business), and above all (at least for me) dialogue. This book has all the other elements in spades, but I felt it fell a little short on the dialoge for my tastes. What was present was without a doubt quality, but I wish there had been more of it. Otherwise, it was an excellent read that I would highly recommend to anyone as addicted to historical romance as I am.

I purchased this book from Smashwords because I've reviewed one of the author's short stories, and have since become friends with Mr. Sawyer. The title really caught my attention, possibly because I live in the south and it isn't all that uncommon to see a mullet wandering around even now. The Good: The story is a very creative fantasy/ comedy. From the very beginning all I could think was, "who comes up with this stuff?" My brain could never have produced something so far off the beaten path. It is an absolutely unique tale, with a perfectly hate-able villain. Seriously, I would love to find Sasha and cut her simply for her overuse of the word, "like." The character development was well executed and the history, or back story, was neatly added along the way, so you get a very clear picture of how the world of Ekoda ended up where it was. There were some unexpected twists as well. The Bad: I'm not really a fan of instant love or "fated" relationships, so George's relationship with Colleen was a bit of a stretch for me. I know the book is not intended to be a romance, so their relationship was not the focal point, which makes it forgivable, even if it did rub me the wrong way. The beginning half of the book has a much faster pace than the second half. I felt that it slowed down a lot towards the end and some parts fell a little flat. The end itself was excellent, it was just the stretch between the 50% mark and roughly the 75/80% mark, that seemed to take longer. Over all, it wasn't a bad read, it just wasn't really for me. I can however, definitely see it being a favorite for others. Sawyer has an excellent imagination and I wouldn't hesitate to try some of his other work, just to see what he's come up with now.
