The reader is plunged into a complex world of empaths as seen through the eyes of a young woman with a traumatic past - and the contrast of a human woman seen through alien vision. The consequences of an empathic society are well thought out and portrayed with refreshing realism. I became engulfed in Marianne's quest to find out what makes the Tolari, and the Sural, tick. Romance unfolds naturally against the backdrop of an alien world and an even more alien culture that is not what it seems. As a writer myself, I don't give out 5*'s lightly, but The Marann deserves it. This is one I will read again and I look forward to the next book.
