Laurie Jackson

Biography

Laurie Jackson passed away the morning of March 14, 2017 from a brain tumor (glioblastoma multiforme grade 4). She fought the cancer for 8 months. She was not able to write her sister's story or any more stories. She will be greatly missed.

Laurie Jackson is the author of several children's stories. She brings her experience growing up in rural Missouri into her stories. Laurie is also influenced by her youngest sister, Mindy's childhood battle with cancer. During her short time on earth Mindy taught everyone around her to enjoy life to the fullest. Laurie reflects this value in her stories. It was Mindy's unfailing smiles throughout her treatments that inspired Laurie to become a writer. She knew she had to bring her sister's uplifting story to life, and help other children through their ordeals.

In 2011, this Grandma decided to go back to school and enrolled in Full Sail University. In 2014, she graduated with a BFA in Creative Writing for Entertainment. She holds a diploma from the Institute of Literature for Writing for Children and Teenagers. Laurie is the author of Matt and Mark: The Farmhouse Adventures and Keeping It Short: An Anthology of Flash Fiction, published on smashwords.com. She continues to work on her sister's story. Matt and Mark is being worked into an adventure series of e-books. Laurie is also working on stories for infants to kindergarten age.

Before pursuing her writing career, Laurie raised five children and home-schooled two of them. Laurie was blessed with a grandson, who further inspired her to write for children. Every time she is with him, his imagination provides Laurie with material for new stories. The antics of Laurie's small Yorkie, Elle and 12 chickens provide Laurie with even more material for her stories.

Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
I first decide on the topic that I want to write about. I then decide on the number of characters. Once I have the topic and characters worked out I then write an outline. At this point I start to develop the story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was Black Beauty. The impact it had on me was how Black Beauty was able to use his strength and survive anything. That message came to me at a time when I was struggling with my own self worth and identity. I came away from the story knowing that I too could find strength within myself and survive anything.
