This author has an ability to describe something that has happened to all of us (the cut thumb) in such a way that it's as if it's the first time it's ever happened. What a gift to be able to take a description of a bandaid and turn it into a complete picture of a man's life ('black with sweat-salt and country dust'). I also loved the details of the birds - I really felt like I knew this place, this life. I've had the great fortune to read other works by this author and this is just a taste of what he can do!
