The Trouble with Spells
on Aug. 05, 2011
I got this book during the manage a blog for free. It's really easy to get into and a very easy read. Maybe that was the problem with this book, it was too easy too read and probably for a younger audience. I read all types of books, from young adult to erotic romance. Personally the problem for me with this book is that I felt no connection to any of the characters. There was no chemistry between Portia and Vance for me. Sparks didn't fly when they were together. The characters were way too accepting of what they were told. The characters are too good for my taste. Vance has his past but he was a child, there was nothing he could really do. He was not evil just used as a child.
Portia doesn't find out she's a witch until her sixteenth birthday. She blindly accepts it, she doesn't have a hard time finding out there are witches, warlocks and magic. There are no really evil characters or obsticles for Portia and Vance in this book until the last few chapters. That's when the book starts to get good. Parents have no problems with Portia and her eighteen year old boyfriend sleeping together in her room. This is so unrealistic. No eighteen year old given the chance to sleep in his girlfriend's room would just sleep with her without touching her. Hormones are going wild and Vance manages to control them because he wants to do right by Portia. They are both virgins and he wants to wait till they get married.
The last few chapters is where it gets really good because Shelley, Portia's best friend whom she has totally abandoned for Vance chances. Her appearance and attitude changes. She became the most likeable character for me when she became bad. Vance's father is an evil warlock, a deamon. He feeds off witches blood to become stronger. But he's only spoken about, never introduced into the story. Maybe if in flashbacks we got to know him and see what he was like the story would've been better. The book leaves off in a cliffhanger. There are two more books after this one. Don't know if I'll get them to see if the writing improves. There also isn't very much dialogue in this book. There is dialogue but it really goes nowhere, it isn't interesting. I know the story has gotten wonderful reviews and many people have loved it. Personally it wasn't that great for me. There was no real romance to me. I say read a sample and see for yourself if you want to read the book. Everyone has different taste in books.
I give the book three stars because from chapter tweenty on the story picked up and got interesting. The last five chapters were the best to me. I'm usually a fast reader but this book took me a bit longer to finish because I wanted something to happen early on and it was all saved until the end.

Didn't know what to expect when I started this book. The first half of the book felt long and drawn out for me. There was too many going back and forth between the past and what was happening to Lindsey. Lindsey was sad that she died and cried a bit. She thought about her parents for a second. After she met Aiden she forgot everything. All that mattered to her them was that she was attracted to Aiden, wanted to stay with him and wanted to lose her virginity to him.
Aiden is a transporter who transport people to the gates of heaven. He's not allowed into heaven till he finds the woman who will get him in, his one true love. Lindsey is that person. She doesn't care that she's dead after spending a few minutes with Aiden. She doesn't want to move on and go to heaven. She wants to be stuck in the in between with Aiden. He's all that matters to her.
I liked the second half of the book much better. Linsey seem more real with what she was going through. I like how Lindsey holds on to her faith even though she's angry at God. Like the message of faith and never losing it even when you've lost someone you love. I could relate with what Lindsey was going through, her pain after losing Aiden, her consuming grief. I've been there after losing loved ones and it's not easy. That was beautifully written because it was real. It's what people go through when losing someone you really love.
The second part made me understand why Lindsey preferred to stay with Aiden. Her parents are divorced and stick her in the middle of their problems.
Overall I enjoyed the book. I like how it didn't shy away from religion and how Lindsey and Aiden turned to God when they lost each other. I would recommend this book. It flows nicely and is well written.

Finished this book after having to put it down and then start it over because I was moving and then other things happened.
I love Syd, she's my favorite female character. I love that she is understanding herself and is slowing growing through out the books. She has a mouth that no matter what just keeps going. Syd has her fears and she has her moments when she's paralyzed by it but she over comes it and keeps going.
Beau is the force that keeps Syd going when she needs that extra push. He and Sarah both are all the support Syd needs. The chemistry between Beau and Syd can set the pages on fire. Their relationship is slowly developing as Syd goes back into each life.
In the first book she lost Jesse and now Jem. Each one a painful lose but with each loss Syd learns something about herself. Mr. A is the devil himself, who torments Syd in each life. He's purely evil and his actions confuse Syd. With each book comes more questions.
Guess I'll be checking the Michelle I. Brooks website till the next book comes out.
My experience with Bone Dressing and this book has been that I can't put them down unless something happens and keeps me from them. I can't wait for book 3. Something needs to happen between Syd and Beau before they combust. When it does, it's going to be scorching hot. Highly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 17.
