  • Stuck on Sep. 03, 2011

Stuck by Lisette Manning Stuck is a short story that caught my attention from the first sentence. It follows the main character Annie Page, who through a heartbreaking decision, she finds her life changed forever. You will find yourself in a post-apocalyptic world with enticing imagery to pull you into a shattered world. Annie, having to decide between taking care of her family or starvation, sets out into the ruin of the world and amidst unseen dangers, Annie finds herself in a state that has her losing her grip on the one thing that keeps her going, her family. I found this story riveting. The emotions played out through Annie’s thoughts give you a personal insight into her world and keep you along for a ride of dire consequences. You feel her fear, pain and heartbreak throughout the smooth flow of Lisette’s story telling. Excellent short story, I’m only disappointed that it ended too fast. Once you start, you have to see what happens! 5 stars
  • Flash Fiction Addiction 22 Short Short Stories on Sep. 03, 2011

Flash Fiction Addiction 22 Short short stories by Garden Summerland has got to be one the most surprising finds I have read this year. It was filled with short, I mean 'short' stories, full of mystery/thriller/murder and a touch of paranormal flavors. I enjoyed reading the 22 she included in this collection. Garden Summerland does an excellent job pulling the reader in to become one with the characters and feel their emotions ranging from love, hate, lust, and regret. I found myself at the end faster than I would have liked and really ready for more. My only regret is that it was a really quick read. Definitely a heart pounding, gut wrenching, mind bending journey. Well worth the read!
  • Coexist: Keegan's Chronicles on Nov. 25, 2011

Coexist by Julia Crane was a great, fast and light read. The story centers around a girl named Keegan, who is an elf. In a world where magical beings integrate well in human society, she has grown up a privileged and happy teenager. Her only care in the world is for shopping for parties and hanging with friends. Yet an imminent battle between light and dark elves has escalates, with Keegan’s family in the very center of it all. Most of the story is spent following Keegan around, having fun with her friends and her family in the day to day of her normal high school life. Keegan and her family have special powers (since they are all elves) and her brother Thaddeus is the ‘chosen one’ who is supposed to save their race and is a gifted warrior and seer. Keegan comes off as likeable but spoiled. Her family is rich and has everything so they are a bit hard to relate to. There are other supernatural beings blending in the city’s population, which somehow Keegan seems oblivious to. She seems to only be aware that she has a chosen one, a predestined love named Rourk, (who is my favorite) and that there are light and dark elves. The roles of the other beings are not fully explained in this book. The elves have been at war for so long, no one seems to know why they are fighting anymore. I enjoyed the storyline but the action did not seem to happen until the end. Conflicts between the two elves seemed to be solved way too easy and fast. I would have enjoyed a bit more depth in the backgrounds of the characters. Overall a steady paced read that kept my interest. I will be reading the next in the series to see what happens with these likable characters.
  • Blood Warrior on Jan. 28, 2012

An amazing take on vampires, demons and other beings. Has to be the most original story line I have read in a while about these supernatural creatures. H.D. Gordon has sculpted a new world, existing alongside ours that is darker and gritty in every way possible. Alexa Montgomery is a regular teenager with some not so regular stuff happening at home. Her mother has her constantly training for fighting and is always reminding her to protect her sister Nelly. Now this makes no sense to Alexa but she goes along with it, trusting her mother though the lack of love that she receives from this abusive-like mother makes me want to slap her mother! But it all pays off when one day, Alexa’s home is attacked and she and her sister a thrust into another world that Alexa knows nothing about. In this new world, in a town called Two Rivers, she learns she is a Sun warrior, the last of her kind actually. She learns to fight at her new school that is for gladiator-style warriors. Something is off about this world though; something sinister that threatens everyone who lives there. She begins to defy authority and is determined to discover how to change things to save herself and the ones she loves. I thought this book was amazing, so imaginative, the action never stops. I feel for Alexa for she is truly alone in the world. No one else can do what she does. She is vulnerable but has a head on her shoulders. I like her sister Nelly, a true kindred spirit and the only one Alexa trusts. Alexa is also courted by many guys who all want her but I like how she realizes that the one who truly loves her for certain-Jackson-is the one she trusts even a little bit. I loved how she never falls head over heels for anyone and doesn’t go along with what everyone does but thinks for herself and wants to know more of what really is going on in Two Rivers and is determined to not fail. I do like Kayden, he is sexy and intriguing but could probably learn to be more upfront about his feelings for Alexa than he is. Excellent original storyline that kept me interested to the end. I was a bit disappointed that H.D. Montgomery ended it the way she did, left it with so many questions unanswered. I will be reading the next book in the series; I have to find out what happens next.
  • The Dark Gifts Birthright on May 29, 2012

This book was an interesting take on vampires. It follows the lore well and creates a sense of structure of the vampire world. Liz is our main character and is a strong person in dealing with the changes in her life and her new role in the war of the Vampire groups. Her mate, Michael, is also an intriguing character, seems to remain pretty grounded throughout and very deadly. Overall I enjoyed the book. It did take me a long time to read this book, and I do read multiple books at once btw. I found the huge cast of characters a bit daunting at first, but they seemed to each have some sort or role, no matter how small. I think the length was a bit much for me; it was not a quick read. The book leads into some tangents that would confuse me at first but seemed to be resolved for the most part at the end. I really liked how well she mixed the different supernatural beings, such as witches and ghosts, together and blended them into a united front in some ways rather than pitch them against each other all the time. Overall, a more traditional take on vampires with some other magical creature factions tossed in.
  • Compromise of the Soul on July 12, 2012

This extremely short story involves a woman dreaming of her possible future. A vampire that takes her breath away, compelling her to succumb to his whims. But can she resist this nocturnal dream? I have to say, I wanted to see more. Lissette’s stories capture you quickly, but end far too fast. I enjoyed this morsel and hope to see her continue with the storyline soon. Good job sucking one in, but I want some more!
  • Closure on July 12, 2012

Heartfelt short story about Ben, who works in movies and spends lots of time abroad with his work. His wife Ellie is the love of his life. He thinks all is well, but one fateful day, the world crumbles his perfect vision of it. I enjoyed this story very much. Very descriptive and you get to feel Ben’s emotions and thoughts throughout. I felt so bad for him. To be in his own bubble in his mind to have it popped suddenly was shocking. I felt his pain alongside him and hoped for some sort of redemption. This short story ended right at the right place but I still was left curious to see what happens to Ben after the implosion of his life. Great Read!
  • Clone Three on Oct. 29, 2012

Review of Clone Three by Patti Larsen 4.5 stars What a knock your socks off adventure. It literally never stops in the action, suspense, twists and turns. This book follows Trio, a Clone who awakens in an unfamiliar world left in ruins after `The Sick' has left the land in shambles and all the adults dead in its wake. Only kids survive it. Some survive as gruesome mutations from The Sick. Trio finds she has memories of the world in its glory, not in disrepair as she finds it. She gets a brief holographic image of someone who looks like her mother, begging her to complete a mission she has no memory of. Knowing the world is depending on her, she journeys across a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, meeting other kids, some friendly like Beckett and Poppy, some not so friendly. Along with a nameless loyal canine, she fights her way across the city to discover where she needs to be. Betrayal, lies and pain surround her. Over and over she loses people she barely gets to know. Will she make it to the end of her journey intact? It was a wild ride. Trio is such a tough girl. She can beat Crawlers, Brights, Howlers (some of many mutations left by The Sick) and treacherous kids to a pulp! I like how good natured she is, it's ingrained in her to take care of others. Doing everything she can to keep those she loves alive, she discovers secrets about herself that others want desperately. I loved the action scenes, there are many. The post-apocalyptic world is painted out to the reader with painstaking detail. It is so real, and so incredibly sad. I am looking forward to reading the next two books in this series. My only qualm was that it was a bit repetitive and predictable, though I can see how necessary it was to pummel any groups of friendly kids Trio meets with the Crawlers and Trio's nemesis Cade always one tiny step behind her. A fabulous intro to what looks like a fast paced, intriguing series. I won this ebook in an online giveaway done by the author.
  • Forever Fae on Dec. 26, 2012

I love stories on the Fae, so many directions you can go. I enjoyed this take on the Fae culture, the faery courts are all here, the story itself was well written and intriguing, it did not disappoint. This story follows Calista, the Summer Court’s princess when she is to get her guardian assigned− It’s a very special ceremony. Merrick, one of her friends, has been in love with her since he can remember and he is determined to win this honor and win her heart. But the Winter Court’s Prince Ryder has arrived for the ceremony, and sparks fly between him and Calista. Is he her chosen one? But these two aren’t the only ones interested in Calista. The dark sorcerer seeks her out for his own malicious purposes and will do anything to get to her. The twists and turns were amazing and kept me on my toes for the entire story. Calista is an awesome, tough, fierce and intelligent princess, not a weakling in any sense. I love how powerful she is and how she can one up the guys any day. I am not a fan of the damsel in distress that can’t fend for herself so this was definitely a big plus for me. The perils she goes through for love, for life and the safety of the land of the Fae are not easy for her. I enjoyed the details of the land of the Fae and the array of colorful characters that infuse this story with action, love, deceit, and some very hot moments. Not a YA read, it has some very racy and graphic scenes. Overall, I love it! A great take on the culture of Faeries, I can’t wait to read more from this author. I received this book free from the author for an honest review of the ebook.
