  • Cuckoo Funeral, Magique, The Odd Job: Three Short Stories on Sep. 17, 2013

My favorite of the trio of stories was Magique, about an aspiring magician and his assistant wife. It describes the disintegration of a marriage and leaves you intrigued about the possible "solution". The first story, Cuckoo Funeral, is a thought provoking story addressing issues of family, poverty, and also issues of bi-cultural identity. The third story, The Odd Job, beautifully describes a young woman finally getting acceptance from a much older man who hires her to scrape paint from his home. Ms. Hyun writes with a beautifully lyrical style. She draws you in with few words, and brings clear images of her characters and scenes leaving you wanting for more.
  • The Stool Pigeon: A Short Story on Sep. 17, 2013

The Stool Pigeon introduces us to Yu-Na, an intriguing character who I hope we will see more from in Ms. Hyun's first novel. Although only four pages long the suspense built in The Stool Pigeon already has me anxious to learn more about this woman and what makes her tick. Finishing this story reminds me of how I felt when I read an Anne McAffrey short story relating to the Dragon Riders of Pern series. I finished it going, "wait, what? Where is the rest? This can't be it! I have to read more!" Ms. Hyun really draws you in quickly and fully. Can't wait until the novel comes out!
