Get in. Buckle-up. Hold on for a white knuckle ride into Dangerous Times with Mr. Frey at the wheel. Yes, it's a big bad convertible with four hundred horses under the hood biting at the spark plugs, and yes his fedora is slanted over one eye and a cigarette aglow at his lower lip, and yes in no time you are careening through the San Pedro night to the tune of squealing tires and hot lead whistling past the windshield as endless nightmare characters and unsolved mysteries flash by screaming for help. And just up ahead cops and miscreants of all varieties roar through the concrete jungles of downtown, .44 magnums blazing, sirens whining over surreal car chases and fierce thugs fleeing in desperation behind alleys, up fire escapes and across rooftops, only to be finally dragged to jail exhausted, remorseful and handcuffed. And suddenly, it's the last page, The End, and Mr. Frey screeches to a stop back where you got in along the dull sidewalks of your personal reality. As he roars off into the rising dawn light, you wonder if he will ever return to stop at your curb, those four hundred thoroughbreds straining toward dangerous times, and if he will lean over and open his door for you at a new page one. Yes he will.
