Homemaker, mother of two grown sons, and former off-the-desk publisher of a family-oriented print small press, (1984 thru 1999), The Pink Chameleon, that she now publishes on line, Paula was raised by her grandmother and mother, and has been writing for as long as she can remember. Even before she could set pencil to paper, she would spin her stories in the recording booths in the Brooklyn Coney Island Arcades for a quarter per 3-minute record. She states, "I love the English language, love words and seeing them on display, typed and alive. A romantic at heart, I write simply and emotionally. One of my former editors kindly described my work, '...her pieces are always deep, gentle and refreshing....'" Paula further states, "My stories are sensitive, deeply emotional, sensual when appropriate, yet non-graphic, family fare, pageturners. My hope is that my writing will bring entertainment and uplift the human spirit, bring a smile to your face and your soul, and leave you filled with a generous amount of hope."

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Manhattan and grew up on the east side in a two-room apartment with my grandmother and my mother. I considered myself fortunate as we had our own bathroom in the apartment. The room, narrow, but long, also housed our ice box. The two rooms which comprised the kitchen and the bedroom were divided by an arch. The bedroom was large enough to accommodate a double bed which I shared with my grandmother, and my mother's twin size bed. A day lounge, a couple of dressers and even a large old fashioned wood vanity with a huge round mirror and two drawers on each side fit snugly into the room, leaving a narrow aisle for us to move around. The kitchen contained a pot belly coal stove for heating, and also a four burner gas cooking stove. In one corner, a lidded bath tub next to a deep basin sink, served as a counter top when both halves of the lid were closed, and as a bathing unit when one or both halves of the lids were raised. When I was ten years old, my Uncle Joe, my grandmother's son, a former music teacher who operated a small tv/radio/small appliance repair shop, brought us a twelve-inch television set with a round screen. This was our pride and joy, and I was allowed each evening to watch about a half-hour before bedtime. My favorite show was "Captain Video." Stories I read, and movies I saw, whose endings left me dissatisfied, I rewrote in my mind, and supplied the endings I preferred. Even before I could set pencil to paper, I would spin my stories in the recording booths in the Brooklyn Coney Island Arcades for a quarter per 3-minute record. Shortly after I turned ten, we moved to a four-room apartment in Brooklyn. And one day, my uncle brought us a twenty-one inch Television Set. Though poor financially, my life was filled with love and good morals. I have no memory of ever going hungry or lacking clothes or dolls. And although I never knew my father, except for a brief meeting in a court room, my grandmother, my mother, and my two uncles filled my early years with wonderful memories. Grandmother would read to me each night as we lay in bed, from an old Italian novel that told the story of a knight and his lady, and a magical kingdom filled with wizards and dragons. I believe that is how my love of reading and writing grew, and nurtured my desire to create my own stories that exemplified the love my family bestowed upon me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Although I published several of my works over the years in small print presses and a local newspaper Discovery Section, and later on line, I had no luck with the slick publications, and many of my larger works gathered dust in my desk drawers. Then I came across Mark Coker's Smashwords.com and though my sales remain humble compared to the best sellers, I am now published in Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple, among others, thanks to Smashwords. Mark Coker has made many dreams come true, among them, mine as well.

It's a wonderful story. Ruth Ann Nordin's writing is so clear and vivid, I feel as if I'm viewing the scenes in person. The plot of "Shotgun Groom" is believable, especially in the late 1800's and the mid-west setting. From the very beginning, I found myself rooting for April and her baby, Nora, and April's brother Sep, commiserating with their plight, and looking forward to a great read, a beautiful romance, and (keeping my fingers crossed) that happy ending. And I was not disappointed. I listened to it on my Kindle and could hardly put it down for a night's rest, before finishing it. This story is not a comedy. It is a serious, sensitive, deeply emotional tale of a young woman's plight to find true happiness after a first marriage to a cruel, selfish, immoral drunkard. When he is killed in a saloon brawl, his brother, Lou, of no better character, attacks her, but she is saved by her younger brother, Sep (short for September) and his shotgun. Joel Larson (Dave Larson's brother from "Eye of the Beholder) is a confirmed bachelor and the local doctor's assistant, and is in Sep's opinion a good man, the right man to protect and love his widowed sister, so when the local doctor sends Joel to check on April's ailing baby, Sep keeps him at their farm and eventually with the aid of Joel's own brothers and the shotgun convinces him to marry April. One has to keep in mind that if Joel truly did not wish to marry April or deep in his heart already care for her, then no one could have forced him. This story is also a mystery. April keeps a room in her small house locked at all times and will let no one enter it. Also, Lou, has more than one reason for wanting to take his dead brother's place with April and the farm. And finally, Sep's own past holds dreaded memories. Ruth developed the story beautifully and kept me glued to the very last word. Shotgun Groom's love scenes between April and Joel, for a mature audience, are tender and sensitive, while at the same time realistic for two gentle, married people who have fallen deeply in love. I give "Shotgun Groom" five well-deserved stars. Ruth Ann Nordin has done it again! :-)
