Jacob Letterstedt Smit

Biography

Jacob Smit was born and spent most of his life in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) as a career teacher, part time farmer and beekeeper. He was also at one time a determined ‘hack and hunt’ golfer.
He loved his high school years at Guinea Fowl where he thrived and matured during the school’s golden years - a brief period when, despite being a government school, it sported a golf course and where formal cricket, rugby, tennis and hockey dances were regarded as quite normal.
The reason for the school’s success was its dedication to high standards in both classroom and on sports fields which made it by far the best boarding school in the Colony.
All that changed, sadly, when the girls were taken away and the place became just another dreary, run-of-the-mill boys’ school.
Jacob and his wife, Gretel, are now United States residents and have two lovely daughters, two fine sons-in-law and two grand grand-daughters.
