  • The Trees: A Collection on Dec. 04, 2011

I really enjoyed The Trees: A Collection. These stories by Todd Brabander were very reminiscent of the stories of one of the greatest short story writers, Ray Bradbury. Especially “Happiness is a Dead Ladybug” and “Sheltered,” which had a sci-fi feel with a humorous or ironic twist. The first story, “Laroche” was like a good campfire ghost story…creepy. And the title story, kind of a modern day fairy tale, is like Hansel & Gretel meets Lord of the Rings meets The Blair Witch Project. They all gave me the same cozy warm feeling that a good Bradbury story gives me. Loved it!

  • Bird of Prey: A Horror Novella on Dec. 29, 2011

I enjoyed this novella, Bird of Prey by Griffin Hayes. It was creepy, suspenseful, and a little bit gory (but not too much - for me, at least). He has you on the edge of your seat through at least half the story. The action only stops temporarily so that the characters can regroup, and we can hear some background. My only complaint is that I wished it was a little longer, or at least that it explained a little bit more about the creatures. I would have liked to hear more of the history of the town and the strange happenings there. Other than that, it was a good story and kept me entertained.
