A GREAT READ. One of the best books I've read. Can't believe it was free. Well written, original, a can't put down book. I've add Nicky Charles to my list of favorite authors, up there with Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison.

Great story, couldn't put it down. Well written.
Just wish it had been longer so I could have enjoyed more of it.
I read this book straight through, the prologue hooked me. I liked the fact that some humans knew about the paranormal world and others didn’t. It was a refreshing take; the characters could be more relaxed but had to be somewhat careful at the same time. There is the mystery of who is killing the werewolves, Niki seeking her revenge but through it all we get to witness Shane and Niki fight to be free of their pasts. The battles they face for a future with each other were something that came across well.
Niki is a woman who was changed, physically and emotionally, at the young age of 17. That has shaped her into the hard, closed off, and revenge seeking vampire she is. It was entertaining and endearing to witness Niki’s struggle to open up her heart. Her biggest obstacle of course was Niki herself. Niki couldn’t see a future for herself, having been consumed with avenging her family for 200 yrs.
Shane wasn’t supposed to be a keeper, but the fates chose him instead. As Shane starts to settle into his life as sheriff, shaman and keeper Niki shows up in his town and grabs his attention in more than one way. Shane now has to deal with this undeniable attraction to a rouge vampire, but also the death of weres by vampires. On top of all this Shane struggles to reconcile feelings he has for Niki. Sure he’s the keeper but the weres, vamps, and other paranormal beings out there are monsters, right?
The Vampire King of this territory made for an interesting character and helped to add depth to Shane’s personality. I’m looking forward to reading his story in the next book, Hungerstorm.
I only had a few issues with the story. Why/how was Shane picked to be the keeper instead of who it was supposed to be? How was Niki turned when her whole family was killed? Did her sire not know right away and if not he surely figured it out as she was hunting him for 200 years? So…why didn’t he claim her as one of his making? A little bit more background would have made it a much more engrossing book.
This is a fantastic short story. It has all the elements I like: mystery, action, romance and a hot werewolf.
Ava’s job as sheriff is to keep the peace between the shifters, vampires, and humans. Yep, it’s as easy as it sounds, especially with someone out there killing humans and vampires. The suspect turns out to be Ava’s hot one night stand Julian, Alpha of the wolf pack. The connection between the two is strong and Julian wants Ava back. Together they need to find out who’s been doing the killings and keep Ava alive after she’s been betrayed by those she should’ve been able to trust.
For a short story this was remarkably detailed and did leave me wishing it had been longer and more developed. It could’ve easily been novel length.
This is an easy 3.5 star for me.
I’ve loved this series from the first book and this one is no exception. Marie made one Frickin’ HOT Hook. I really like the direction she took this familiar fairy tale. It’s no longer familiar, but it sure is better. The story comes alive with the descriptions of the various realms. I could close my eyes and they came alive. I’m pretty sure I’ll never be able to watch Peter Pan the same way again. I’ll definitely be substituting their Hook with the Hook from this book.
James (Hook) has been just existing for the past century. He lost his love in one of the worst ways possible. He drinks too much and is becoming more like the stories portray him all the time. James is about at the end of his rope when fate, otherwise known as Danika, literally drops Trisha at his feet.
Trisha has also known pain and loss, especially in this life. She isn’t even sure she’s capable of love. From the moment she lands at Hooks feet she lets him know that he may be the captain of the ship, but definitely not of her. Trisha’s journey from disbelief to lust and finally to love was very fun and touching to witness.
The interactions between James and Trisha were funny and emotional. The best part is finding out that Marie Hall isn’t finished with the world of Kingdom. YAY! There will be more stories from this wonderful place.
