The Baldric Press

Publisher info

Andrew Butler was born in Devon, went to university in Leeds and now lives in Croydon, in the Greater London area. In 1990 he semi-accidentally became a clerk in the financial services industry (well, it fit the criteria: indoors, mostly sitting down, no heavy lifting) and has been doing much the same ever since.

He burns the other end of the candle with numerous interests (some quite esoteric), including studies relating to the Sherlock Holmes stories and to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

"Baldric" was one of several nicknames he acquired (in a roundabout way) at university. By then he had already produced a few amateur publications - including a magazine for the Tolkien Society local group he had been running - and he can’t remember now exactly when he first put "The Baldric Press" on one of them. After university, his involvement with several Sherlock Holmes study groups grew and he definitely attributed publication of a newsletter and a couple of monographs to The Baldric Press at that stage, so perhaps that was when it all started. In 2004 he teamed up with Alex Hall and Mike Johnson to bring out the first 'proper' book from this old/new publishing venture.
