The book does not shy away from the brutal events of the story, nor in its depiction of the cruelty humanity is capable of, but instead shines a light on them to reveal every facet, and to show every ripple the events cause in the lives of the characters. The result is a fleshed-out, believable world with characters whom you can detest, whom you can empathize with, and whom you could even care for.
