Smashwords book reviews by Ragnar Lodbrok

  • Saucy Selection on May 25, 2012

I guess I am probably not Vivi’s target market. I’m a heterosexual male. But what I also am is a graphic artist who is starting to try my hand at book design and so I came to look at smashwords at examples of book covers. And this is what drew me to Vivi’s books. I swear! :-) But seriously, I do like the covers. Other erotica covers are SO predictable. These have great polish. So then, out of curiosity, I downloaded the free book: Saucy Selection. It was free, afterall. I was quite surprised at the quality of Vivi’s writing. Really engaging and believeable. And umm… very, very hot! So against all the odds… I could scarcely believe it… I have downloaded her other two books! Which I am surprised how keen I am to get reading :-) Perhaps I’ll even write a review!

So, here I am, a (really I promise) heterosexual guy writing a review of a chick-lit erotica book! What will become of me! :-) After discovering Vivi’s writing by accident and somewhat guiltily downloading her books (I’m sure someone is watching me!) I let myself go to it and I just enjoyed the little insight I received into the mind of this utterly wicked lady-writer. Let me say first off that she really can write. That surprised me. I sort of expected this whole genre to be full of poorly expressed drivel. But no. This was well written and very sexy. COME WITH ME is full of completely different settings in which some naughty little minx gets up to mischief in the most wickedly entertaining way. And somehow I end up wishing I could meet every one of them :-). But it was the window into Vivi’s mind that I really enjoyed. She shares her fantasies (and I can’t help wonder how many of these were more than just fantasies) and that insight into what really goes on behind the scenes inside another human being was interesting indeed. And quite a lot hot! Check out the story, “The Tasting” to see what I mean!

Now this was WAAAAAAY unexpected. As a hetro-sexual male that really quite accidentally read Vivi’s books I guess I had bought into the myth that men are more into the hot ‘n’ heavy and don’t want to be bothered with the story. Stories are “girl’s stuff,” right? Phoowoah! No way! JUICY FRUIT is billed, by Vivi herself, as having more characterisation and giving more build up to the story. Well that totally worked for me! I really liked the way I felt like I was getting into each characters mind and story and really felt the dramatic tension. So the… um… dramatic climax really was… climactic. My favourite was the title story, “Juicy Fruit”. At first I thought the build up was a bit slow. Then despite myself I really got drawn in. And then it got kinky in the best possible way. So Vivi… if you read this… you have a fan!

This was frivolous fun. I don't have anything bad to say about it but... I have to admit I just don't feel like it added anything to my life. So... umm... thanks I guess. It IS free!

Really good story. Competent writing. Strange choices like everything being in the present tense. On balance I enjoyed the book but found myself constantly very slightly annoyed. Like eating ice-cream with a fly buzzing around your face. :-) I decided not to purchase the follow-up work.

Reading 'around' this book I hoped to get a lot more out of it than I did. Not that there aren't some wonderful ideas expressed here - and I certainly applaud those! But it became very evident early on that I am not the target market. If you are not a teenage girl this book will probably not grab you.
