Young adult romance novels have become very popular, and many premises have been done to death, but "Oceanborn" is a fun and charming breath of fresh air in the genre. The deftly woven tale of love and adventure combines the motif of a young girl falling for a supernatural boy with a clever take on Greek mythology and manages to capture teenage life with all its hopes, dreams, uncertainties and awkwardness perfectly. From the very beginning, it is clear that there is more at stake than just the characters' personal happiness: The old legends about deadly occurrences in the small seaside town turn out to be a bit too true for comfort, and Kaiea and Alannis play a pivotal role when it comes to dealing with what lurks beneath the waves. But no matter how exciting the plot may be, the characters themselves - lovable if flawed, funny and relatable, and often seeming like real people in their glorious complexity - are what makes this book unique, together with the town of Poseidon's Bay itself. Its quirky denizens and fully realized topography add much to the charm of the tale, and you will find yourself wishing your could spend your next vacation there (even if swimming beneath the Old Pier can be a bit dangerous) ... Highly recommended!
