Alain Miles

Biography

I've spent much of my career in the Mid-East, where I worked as an HR consultant and successfully self-published and marketed business software.

As I move into a new career as a creative writer, I'm planning to use Smashwords as my main publishing platform - because it allows me to retain total control over what I publish, what I publish, and what I charge for my work. I'm not planning to release print versions of the work published here.

April 2010 will see the launch of a novel that's been years in the making. 'The Lebanese Troubles' is the story of expatriates living in Beirut as civil war breaks out in 1975. At first, the conflict is nothing more than a shadow passing over Richard and Claire Devine's lives. They're safe in their Western enclave, the war will be over by the weekend, and everyone will be back on the beach. But as the country slowly disintegrates, relationships flounder, loyalties are tested, certainties evaporate. And inevitably, they're no longer observers but accidental participants.

As well as the novel, I'm planning a series of short stories, available as free downloads to introduce readers to my work. Some will be Middle East related, others not. The first of these, 'Waiting for Orders' is available here now.

Life in this beautiful old city offered everything. Mediterranean sun just two hours away from mountain snow. Exciting new friends - a madcap American journalist and his exotic Palestinian girlfriend. For newcomers to Beirut Richard and Claire Devine, there was no telling where the world ended and heaven began. Until fighting broke out in the suburbs - but surely that was somebody else's war..

It started as a routine training mission in the desert. How was old Gray to know that he would end up changing history? In this short sharp satire, author Alain Miles reveals the truth about everything - science, religion, terrorism, climate-change, consumerism, and Wordsworth. To enjoy this product at its best, read it aloud in the style of a young Jack Nicholson.
