Alan B. Bradley

Biography

Most of my biographical information can be found in my memoir “Lies and Broken Promises”. I did not do very well in school initially, but later in my late 20's, I went on to earn my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. I earned highest honors with a 3.85 grade point average for my bachelor’s degree and 4.00 for my master’s degree. At Montclair, I concentrated on experimental psychology type courses even though they did not have that specific degree program at the time. I knew I wanted to get into a Ph.D. program in Experimental Psychology.

I enrolled in a three year doctoral program in Experimental Psychology at Fordham University. That was a wake-up call for me since I am an atheist and Fordham is a Catholic University. Half the courses are taught by priests. I was also accepted into the Experimental Psychology program at Kentucky State University with a fellowship good for $4,000 for each of 3 years. I turned the fellowship down because I was involved with a girlfriend and didn’t want to end the relationship by moving to Kentucky for three years. I hoped to concentrate on statistics and courses like Physiological and Experimental Psychology. I thought that would make for a good career as a professor and researcher. However, a motorcycle accident ended my career in college. I have no lingering problems from the accident, but after 8 months on pain pills, I couldn’t psych myself up to get back into college work the following year.

When I knew a Ph.D. was not in my future, I looked for work in the computer field which was very rewarding for me. I always wanted to write since way back in grammar school. I never had the time or the attention span to sit down and do any serious writing until a couple of years ago. My focus over the next few years will be on more writing.

Smashwords Interview

Describe your desk
My desk is usually fairly clean and neat, but I always have a well organized stack or two of papers on it. The papers are usually open projects or printouts of topics I am interested in such as quantum physics or computers. I always have a couple of open projects on windows computers which I repair in my spare time. I strive to know as much as possible about the internal workings of Microsoft Windows and associated software.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Northern New Jersey in Union City and Secaucus. I moved from Union City to Secaucus when I was 12 years old. My experiences in Union City were instrumental in the teenager I became in Secaucus. My childhood, as described in my book, Lies and Broken Promises, took a number of unusual turns. I grew into a young adult with many unusual and incorrect views of the world. I was a passionate young man, but my passion was not all linked to mainstream social or sexual stimuli. In Union City, I remember having sexual experiences back to my earliest memories. These experiences came at the hands of young male friends and especially with an older male friend of the family. I never considered myself to be abused nor the experiences unwanted. I always enjoyed the encounters and looked forward to them. I was a sexual being during my childhood and the act of writing my memoirs helped me look at these experiences and to put some order into my life. To this day, I do not feel I was abused nor taken advantage of.
