Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up near the city of Norwich in the south east of England. It is a medieval city with a castle and two cathedrals. There are cobbled streets and lots of old buildings that look like they may have been built by people who had enjoyed one too many ales. Growing up with all that history surrounding me made a great muse for my imagination. In the village I grew up in, there is an ancient church. An urban legend surrounding the church sparked the initial inspiration for my books. Hence why I use churches in my storyline...it has nothing to do with religion :-)
When did you first start writing?
I was a late starter. I first started writing in 2006 when I was 37. It had always been a dream of mine to write a book about my backpacking adventure around Australia, taken when I was only 20 yrs old. I had always held back, thinking that no one would want to read a memoir about my trip. I had a light bulb moment after talking to a friend and decided I could write it as a piece of fiction, using my adventures as a back drop. A Summer Down Under was born. It was originally titled What's a Jilleroo to do? and I printed a few copies from Lulu.com (about all that was available back then) It sold well locally and I had some good feedback, but getting it any further was proving fruitless.

After I started writing The Amulet, I took down my Aussie book and it languished on my hard drive until 2012 when I decided to revisit it. I had 3 books in the Custodian novel series under my belt by that time and had learned A LOT about writing. I was relieved I had taken the Aussie book down. I admit, it was horribly written. I gave it a revamp; changing it from 1st to 3rd person POV, sent it through 6 beta readers, had it professionally edited, changed the title and worked with a professional cover designer. I was thrilled with the result.

Having built up a wonderful readership for my YA series, a majority of whom just happen to be adult women, I had a good cross over readership for my debut romance.

Faedra was enjoying the fact that everything was back to normal. Well, as normal as it could get when you had the ability to manipulate energy, were protector of an ancient Fae amulet, and lived with a fairy guardian 24/7. Her dad had even started dating. Yes, all was right again in Faedra’s world, or so she thought…

I really enjoyed this book. Paranormal romance is my favorite genre and this story didn't disappoint. Cole is ultra sexy and well portrayed. Loved the whole feline twist in a genre where I haven't seen it before. That was refreshing. The story moved at a good pace and kept me turning the pages. Thanks so much for this free read. I will certainly keep an eye out for any future books you may have in the pipeline.
  • The Fairy Book on Dec. 16, 2009

Fun and Sassy were the two words that sprang into my head after reading The Fairy Book. I loved Isabel’s character, she made me smile. The pace of the book romped along at a good pace and the story flowed well, keeping you engaged all the way through. I thought the poetry was original, and in this case it really helped the story stay snappy and fresh. I also liked the examples of poetry at the end of the book. It helped a poetry challenged person like me understand the story more.
  • S.E.A.L. Team Omega: Flames of Betrayal on Feb. 06, 2010

Sierra created a story that keeps you on your toes. I instantly connected with her main character, Cassidy and was really rooting for her throughout the whole book. She went through a pretty harrowing ordeal and I think Sierra did a good job when writing about the situation. I liked the way that she was portrayed as this really strong force to be reckoned with, when just under the surface she was a frightened and vulnerable woman. I found that you really had to concentrate when reading this book because there was so much going on it would be easy to lose track. There are a plethora of characters, actually so many that I found myself concentrating on only a few of them as I couldn’t keep track of the others and they just became incidentals in my mind. I don’t know if Sierra has personal experience with this sector of the military but to me, someone who knows nothing about it, she created a very believable world. The one thing I appreciated was the fact that she didn’t use a lot of foul language, which so often goes hand in hand with this type of story and the way it was written it certainly didn’t feel like it was missing anything without a lot of swearing. Overall this is a fast paced, action packed story that has twists and turns all over the place. An enjoyable read.
  • Falling in Love with Her Husband on March 24, 2010

Falling In Love With Her Husband is a wonderful story about a girl who uses a childhood friend who loves her to get her away from a situation she doesn’t want to be in. Little does she know that the boy she grew up next door to, and considered somewhat boring would turn out to be such a wonderful man. This love story had me enraptured from start to finish. The way Ruth Ann described the landscape and the era had me totally immersed to the point that I felt I was actually there, leaning against the door frame watching Ann’s disastrous attempts at keeping house after having servants do everything for her, or watching as Todd lived his dream with Ann by his side. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance. It is such a feel good story, it will lift your spirits.
  • The Cold Wife on April 07, 2010

I am quickly becoming a fan of Ruth Ann Nordin. This was the 2nd book I have read by this author and once again I loved it. This book is an historical romance and the author was able to transport me to the time and place of the story with no effort at all. The story is about a young woman forced to marry someone she believes to be boring, so that she doesn't get left destitute after her father is bankrupt. Little does she know that the man has loved her since she was 14 years old. Carrie is incredibly annoying to start off with but that is intentional, she doesn't yet realize what this young man is like, and we as the reader do. I got to the point where I wanted to shake her to get some sense into her. But thankfully she soon comes to realize what a wonderful man her husband is and, well you'll just have to read the story for yourself. Although the ending is a happy one, it had a twist that I wasn't expecting.
  • The Faeries of Birchover Wood - The Bad on Feb. 19, 2013

This is a charming children's fairytale about a young 8 yr old boy and his adventures with the fairies and something dark and dangerous that lurks in the woods behind his house. Solomon is the main character and he is an excitable little boy. He is lucky enough to have a loving mum and dad. The author wrote likeable and 'real' characters that I could relate to. If I had children of my own this would have been a great story to read to them before bed. It started off a bit slow, as most 1st-in-a-series books do when the author is 'world-building', but hang in there, as the story starts to move right along the further you get into it and I found it hard to put down. The author was able to create a very descriptive 'other world' in the woods and was able to transport me there with his writing. I also enjoyed the very creative names he came up with for the fairies and mythical creatures.
