Bill Mays

Biography

I currently live in Denver Colorado, though my work carries me all across the country and beyond the borders. I have a degree in studio art, have been an actor and professional artist, as well as many other things, but I have most recently found my love for writing. Fantasy adventure is my absolute favorite, though science fiction follows at a close second. Me and my partner of ten years keep active in various fields and I plan to continue writing fantasy books for many years to come.

Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
My writing process is very drawn out. I usually get inspired by an idea and then start to write by hand on some form of scratch paper (often hotel note pads). After getting a few pages down, I transfer the text to an electronic file where I begin fleshing it out and editing. I continue this whenever I'm inspired to add to the story with periodic bouts of revisiting previous writing and editing again. After that, I struggle to reach the ending I had in mind (many times with that ending morphing significantly from my original idea) and finish the story. I then go back to read and edit and read and edit several times until it is ready for the proofers. After that, I do it one more time and it is ready to be published! (Sigh) That explanation made me tired.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a background in graphics and I love to design my own covers. I usually take up an idea that incorporates something prominent from the story or some piece of information that I find particularly interesting. I try to include elements that tie to the story in many ways, even if I'm the only one who gets them.
