  • Setting Boundaries - Part of the Coming Storm series on Aug. 09, 2011

I loved this story... it tells the story before Not Magic Enough and Coming Storm, about three who were thrown together to mark boundaries on lands in the times of a fragile peace between their races, and on the way develop strong friendships not only despite their differences but also despite the efforts of people who want the peace to fail. The author packs a lot of meaning and at the same time action into a short story, and if I hadn't read the other books in the series earlier, it would have made a great introduction to Elon, Jareth and their world. VERY good read!

I found Not Magic Enough to be a very delightful read. Like other books I've read from the author, I found myself easily and quickly getting completely into the story, as if I was there. It's an introduction to a fantasy world in the middle earth tradition of humans, elves and dwarves, but it also works well on a level of interpersonal dynamics. The opening set the tone for both of those aspects, almost dream-like. The plot was intriguing and at the same time easy to follow, as was the development of the story from the characters' perspectives. At the end it left me eager for more -- wanting to find out more about the realm and the characters who lived there, their struggles, battles and triumphs.
