Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the South in a two parent home where I spent most of my time inside. It wasn't the nicest neighborhood and I was a chubby geek girl who preferred the company of books to most activities. I lived in the library and took regular trips to the young adult section in my local Bookstar. Which was like heaven to me. The bookstore was always quiet and had all this mood lighting. It was very different from my house!
My family and friends were almost all middle class warriors and I noticed that I rarely read books with characters like us: minorities, queers, working class folks, women who don't take anyone's crap. My writing today is all about giving more people like me who grew up like me a chance to see themselves reflected in a good story. Media representation matters and well, it's like they all say, be the change you want to see in the world.
When did you first start writing?
As a kid. I always loved books and wanted to be the best writer after making my first 'A' in English. English nerds unite!
