Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm from Columbus, and I think the Midwest has always had an interesting viewpoint on a lot of issues. People in the area have more diverse personalities than other areas of the country. In New York, everyone keeps to themselves, while in Los Angeles everyone is exuberant. Because I write about people, I think the middle of the country gives me more inspiration than anywhere else could.
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing seriously since about fifth grade, when I wrote a Mother's Day poem that was four stanzas. Since then I've always been writing down a few things a day. I'd say a big moment which pushed me further was an experience in the tenth grade. My English teacher told the class she was going to assign a Shakespearian sonnet, but she felt the assignment was too hard. My ego wrote a poem that night and I turned it in to her the next day, and I've been trying to prove myself ever since.
