In his book Low Ferritin: Understanding Performance Issues with Long Distance Runners and Student Athlete Competitors, Scott Webb discusses a concern that is very current. Over a thousand marathons run last year across the United States alone, which generated more than half a million finishers. The huge number of marathon enthusiasts makes this book an essential addition in every runner’s book shelf. What I love about the book is how Webb was able to take a topic as complex as iron assimilation, and present it to readers more simply and in a language that readers from all ages will understand and absorb easily. It also helps that Webb himself is a professional colon hydrotherapist, which means that he has the proper background and done ample research on the subject before forming his own conclusions regarding low ferritin among runners. The book is helpful not only to long distance runners and student athletes, but also I think to everyone else who is just planning on taking up running as a serious sport. Low Ferritin is able to provide extensive medical information anchored on research to help runners, both experienced and amateur, what to do about their performance issues. Moreover, another think I liked about the book is that Webb doesn’t stop at just diagnosing the problem and explaining it. In chapter five, he provides dietary options for runners with low ferritin. From defining what iron assimilation is, to suggesting products and homemade solutions to people with low ferritin, the book is informative enough to jumpstart a runner’s journey to performing better. Overall, the book is a great read that I would personally buy as a gift to my runner friends.
