John Van Roekel awoke one morning in 1994 after reading Nathan Miller’s excellent biography of Theodore Roosevelt, and told his wife Pam that he was going to write a novel about Buffalo Soldiers. After years of writing and research, including trips to the Wounded-Knee site in South Dakota and San Juan Hill in Cuba, Braver Deeds is the result.

John is currently working on his next novel, Prisoner Moon. He is sixty-three years old and lives with Pam in San Diego.
